PRJ won his first match at a PTQ when his opponent in the 0-3 bracket didn't show. His more recent results are better, but he is best known for amazing 43 card combos and strange deck designs.

Yawgmoth’s Whimsy #192 – Judging the Last Valencia PTQ

Last weekend I had a chance to head judge the very last (at least locally) Valencia PTQ. I’ve got the Top 8 decklists (for those of you planning on playing the format on MTGO, I guess), plus one “how the hell can that be in contention” deck, and the mystery of the phantom judge. It’s the dog days of Magic writing, with only a handful of Lowryn cards released. Could be worse — I could be writing about how the Lowryn basic land artwork will impact Legacy.

Yawgmoth’s Whimsy # 191 – Lessons Dreamblade Teaches

A year ago, Wizards launched Dreamblades minis game at GenCon with a $50,000 tournament, and a full schedule of big dollar events. This year it held the $50,000 World championships at GenCon, but also announced that Wizards was ending support for organized play. Since Dreamblade was based on the same model that drives Magic, what does that say about Magic the Gathering?

Yawgmoth’s Whimsy #190 – Magical Weekend

Last week was a long, hard slog, with too much work, a nasty cold and no Magic. In short, exciting things failed to happen. What was worse was that I had already bought some online Tenth Edition packs, but the release events didn’t start until Friday. I knew the packs were there, and that I had to wait to open them. It was like being a kid two weeks before Christmas. The weekend, however, promised to be better. My goal was to play a lot of Magic, and to hit as many formats as possible.

Yawgmoth’s Whimsy #189 – Welcome to Legacy

At U.S. Nationals, I head judged a Legacy tournament. I collected decklists, started round one then walked along the tables. Towards the end of one table, two minutes into the round, a player was sitting alone. I asked “no opponent?” His response — “No, match over. I never got to draw a card.”

Welcome to Legacy.

Yawgmoth’s Whimsy #188 — U.S. Nationals

I’m in Baltimore, for U.S. Nationals. It’s hot. I’ve got a couple hours to kill before I start work. I think I’ll head for side events and some drafts, but before that I’ll try to give you an update on the evolving Standard format. I’ll also give you a little bit of the feel of judging at an event like Nationals.

Yawgmoth’s Whimsy #187 – Moving on to Tenth

Tenth Edition has been released. By unanimous consent, we drafted tenth instead of Time Spiral / Planar Chaos / Future Sight last week at FNM. We will also, apparently, be drafting Tenth during some of the Summer Magic events at the local store. It’s just in time. People seem to have figured out Time Spiral drafting, and the drafts are getting old.

I have finally got some time to do some serious block playtesting. Some of that is done with paper, where Darksteel Ingots can do a fine job pretending to be Coalition Relics. However, much of that playtesting also occurs on MTGO, where you need the real cards. I had to choose the rares on which I’d blow my budget — Korlash, Tarmogoyf, Relics or some lands. I chose the green Lhurgoyf. I chose unwisely.

Yawgmoth’s Whimsy #185 – A Tenth of Tenth

As you read this, Magic Game Day will be just three days away. Magic Game Day is the equivalent of a prerelease for Tenth Edition, and a lot of stores will have special events. It’s more widespread than official prereleases — almost any store that runs FNM may well have Magic Game Day events. These stores will have special foils, etc — but the main reason to attend is because the cards look good.

Yawgmoth’s Whimsy #184 — Pro Tour: San Diego

The first Revised booster I ever opened had a Birds of Paradise. So did one of the first boosters I ever opened online. I have always loved that card, so I really wanted to see a real, live bird of paradise. San Diego Zoo has a lot of birds, including one line of cages with exotics of that genus. The eighth cage had BoPs, but they had rotated behind the foliage and I couldn’t see any. The ninth cages had a sign saying “Animals Temporarily Removed from this Exhibit.” The tenth cage, however, had Birds of Paradise set off against a lovely black wall.

Yawgmoth’s Whimsy #183 – Future Sight for Multiplayer

It’s the very beginning of the Block Constructed PTQ season. What people want, more than anything else, is Block tech. However, since I am writing this just before the first big event in the format — GP: Montreal — I’m going to have to talk about something else. If I do say anything about Block, the odds of looking like an idiot are much too high. A quick trip to the “drafts and ideas” folder showed me one possibility: my Future Sight review. The main focus of my set reviews is multiplayer and casual play…

Yawgmoth’s Whimsy #182 – Regionals Aftermath

I played at Northern Regionals. I took my modification of Josh Silvestri’s rework of Evan Erwin’s Glittering Control deck. My highlights included a turn 3 kill. The lowlights included a couple play errors that cost me Top 8. I’ve also included the Top 8 decklists, and a breakdown of all the Regionals Top 8 decks across the U.S. and the world. Enjoy.

Yawgmoth’s Whimsy #181 — Road to Regionals: Regionals Comes at You Fast

Get ready for Magic the Gathering Regionals!
With Regionals a week away, I have had zero time to playtest or innovate. I’m going to play at Regionals, basically, cold. I’m guessing I’m not the only one in that situation. I’ll talk about how I’m going to choose a deck, in the hopes that it might help others in the same boat.

Yawgmoth’s Whimsy #180 – Green is Dumb, Blue is Stretchy

Green is like chicken pox. You know it won’t help, but it is so hard to resist scratching. Those little sores are an irritation that you just can’t ignore. Even knowing that scratching actually makes things worse, nothing short of boxing gloves could make me leave them alone. So, because Mike Flores and Bennie Smith were talking about Green recently – scratch, scratch, scratch.

Yawgmoth’s Whimsy #179 – Concessions and IDs

At work, I have a mug that says “Everyone’s Entitled to my Opinion.” My coworkers know that that’s my mug. So, if Flores and Bennie Smith are arguing about Green, and Zac Hill writes more about concessions, is there any doubt I’ll jump on my soapbox? No, didn’t think so. This week I’ll opine on concessions, but I’ll add some facts to the debate.

Yawgmoth’s Whimsy #178 – Catching Up

The Ultimate Extended Tournament took far longer than I thought. Even though I was stuck in the past, the world moved on. I’ll fast-forward my way through a recap, but I have a lot to catch up on: City Champs. Vintage. Future Sight. Magic Online. The scarcity of PTQs. And more.
