Video: Melira Pod In Modern

Watch as Pro Tour Philadelphia Top 4 competitor Sam Black tries out Scavenging Ooze in the maindeck of Melira Pod and read his commentary to see his thoughts about it.

Melira Pod is unpopular right now, largely because of Scavenging Ooze, but I haven’t been able to find any other decks I really like Scavenging Ooze in, so today I’m just going to put Scavenging Oozes in my Melira Pod deck and see how it goes.

My opening hands and draw steps that match were excellent. The great thing about this deck is that it plays like a fair deck except sometimes it just wins.

Game 1 I assume my opponent never found a cascade spell, which seems very lucky for me. Game 2 I didn’t have a great draw, and my opponent had Gargadon with multiple cascaders, so I just couldn’t win. Game 3 was really interesting and shows that you never know when Canonist is going to be important. It’s not just for Storm, though I really won because my opponent didn’t draw Greater Gargadon, which is the most important card in his deck by far.

I wonder if my opponent would have kept his hand in game 1 if he realized that he didn’t have colored mana. In game 2, I think he conceded a little prematurely, but he was going to have to get really lucky with his Bobs from there. I’m happy with how I played it, not that I had a lot of options.

Most decks aren’t going to beat the draws Cedric had this game, and my deck is certainly not the exception. That was brutal.

Overall, the Scavenging Oozes weren’t great, but I think that’s largely because of the matchups I faced. Still, it’s some evidence that they might be better in the sideboard than the maindeck. Maybe more Abrupt Decays should be in the main.

Thanks for watching,

Sam
