Video Daily Digest: The More Things Change

Though Collected Company is long gone from Standard, Ross Merriam’s Daily Digest scopes out an Bant energy-themed list that went 5-0 in a Magic Online League and looks like a direct descendant!

Today’s deck is from a bygone era, when, instead of a four-mana artifact looking for a haymaker in the top six cards of your library, Standard was terrorized by a four-mana instant that looks for two haymakers in the top six cards of your library.

The more things change, the more they stay the same.

If it weren’t for the energy subtheme, I would’ve spent hours searching this list for Collected Company, but this deck is surprisingly fair for what’s gone down in Standard in the last couple of years.

We have some creatures on a good curve, some removal, some card advantage, and, most importantly, several good cards against Aetherworks Marvel decks of all kinds.

Spell Queller is the real standout there, providing both an answer and a clock. Its presence in the deck directly leads to the addition of Archangel Avacyn, since the latter gives you a threat to cast on turns where you leave up the former but don’t find a desirable target.

In addition to Spell Queller, the deck has a whopping six counterspells for Aetherworks Marvel in the sideboard. Of course, your opponents will be prepared to win games without their easy button, but you have plenty of tools in those fair games as well.

Cast Out and Declaration in Stone answer anything from Ulvenwald Hydra to Ulamog, the Ceaseless Hunger, and the deck is filled to the brim with powerful threats.

And those threats give the deck, clearly tuned heavily toward Aetherworks Marvel, a fine game against the rest of the format. The Longtusk Cub / Rogue Refiner / Tamiyo, Field Researcher curve is going to win plenty of games, and the energy theme gives you the fixing to seamlessly play three colors.

Most Spell Queller decks have to play too many individually weak creatures to compete in the metagame, but playing green gives you access to plenty of good options. Bant may have lost Collected Company and Reflector Mage, but it’s still kicking.
