Type One Oath Dissected

Oath is perhaps the only archetype in the format that has been revolutionized by Champions of Kamigawa, thanks to one card: Forbidden Orchard. Despite the short time since its introduction, many individuals on both sides of the Atlantic have tried to use a variety of different cards in the deck. I thought it would be useful to dissect the various levels of success found by different builds in the last couple of months. In comparing the twenty Oath builds that have made Top 8s in major Type One events since October, only twelve cards were in all twenty decks.

In comparing the twenty Oath builds that have made Top 8s in major Type One events since October, only twelve cards were in all twenty decks:

The Oath Foundation

Unanimous Cards

4 Brainstorm

4 Oath of Druids

1 Tropical Island

3 Forbidden Orchard

That doesn’t mean that the rest of the choices weren’t clear to the majority, however. It just means that for every other card, one or several deckbuilders managed to find a substitute and still make Top 8 against 50+ other players. (These builds include everything I could find up to January Waterbury, starting with the Meandeck premiere at SCG II.) Despite all the efforts of players, though, Team Meandeck’s opening build clearly dominates the numbers.

#######_#_########## 4th Forbidden Orchard

For almost everyone, success was realized by including the fourth Orchard to maximize the chances of getting the combination. The reasons I can imagine for leaving it out might be that it’s easy enough to find without #4 (three is enough for Intuition), and multiples might give the opponent too many Spirits if an Oath of Druids doesn’t show up. Neither reason is shown to be strong by the results.

One of the strengths of the Meandeck build is its almost mono-Blueness. With so many Blue spells and a small need for Green mana, fetchlands can make it seem like the deck has abundant basic Islands. Only one quasi-insane build ditched Islands entirely, in favor of a rainbowy mana base reminiscent of a bag of Skittles. Canadian Skittles, in this case.

Green is 95% decisively not the main color in an Oath deck. (All spells are Blue. We have always been at war with Eastasia.) Black, unsurprisingly, is in the same position.

The same Skittles-Oath designer was also a T.S. Eliot fan. This makes sense to me considering the two Landstill decks in the same Top 8 as that build.

____#_______________ 1 Faerie Conclave

The one-of Conclave struck me as pretty weird here, but I guess it was inevitable that someone would bring old-school Oath instincts to the new, more comboish version.

_____##_______#_____ 1 Library of Alexandria

Oath has a lot of very good reasons not to play this. Most of the card advantage spells it uses don’t actually result in drawing – Intuition, Brainstorm, and Impulse are strictly self-replacing by themselves. The Intuitions are also more likely to get non-AK targets than in a Psychatog deck. Moreover, with a full boat of acceleration, frequent inclusion of Misdirection, and a strong desire to play a first-turn Oath if possible, keeping seven in hand is less likely than with a lot of other decks. So no Library.

Speaking of acceleration, you can see a wide variety here. Some players used nearly none for budget reasons (Can you hear us, Europe? Proxies!), while others have a veritable Workshop deck’s worth. Lotus Petal is a prime display of how much a first-turn Oath is valued.

All the variants except for Skittles-Oath played FoW. All the non-Skittles decks played Drain except two with clear budget constraints (they chose Counterspell). No surprise that those two cards are in the standard package. Misdirection hasn’t gotten a lot of attention in North America this year, mainly for lack of a deck that could make good use of it. With so little dependence on strict card advantage, a high Blue spell count, and a need to resolve particular cards to win, Misdirection’s ability to win furious counter wars makes it a pretty common choice for this deck. Mana Leak appears for similar reasons, and beats Counterspell for pure speed reasons (playing it before colored mana develops).

The draw/tutor engine stayed intact through almost all builds. I was kind of freaked out by the lack of 100% correlation between Darksteel Colossus and Tinker, but then I got over it. I guess Crop Rotation was thrown in by the players who felt that (a) Green was good and (b) after cutting an Orchard for some other Green land they still wanted to actually find Orchard. Overall, the most noteworthy thing is that there isn’t very much effort to gain numeric card advantage here; it’s an exercise in filtering through your deck for needed components.

Disruption was very sparsely used. Probably as a side effect of having so many counters and such a sudden win condition, it’s usually not necessary. Nevertheless, about a third of the successful decks felt it was worth maindeck space.

These cards go wherever the deckbuilder wants (a) extra turns and (b) winning. I’m blaming budget reasons for their absences in decks that could otherwise cast them.

Some of these just seem like cards a person liked without special reasoning. What does Rorix do that Akroma isn’t a bunch of times better at? What was so pressing on the life total that Ancestor’s Chosen was seen as better than Phantom Nishoba? The thing that sticks out at me among the highly popular angel selection is that Iridescent is completely out of favor in recent builds. It can probably be viewed as superfluous in light of the absence of removal capable of hitting Akroma and the dearth of creatures that are (a) power greater than four and (b) have a color.

Spot removal: not all it’s cracked up to be. Noted.

Seriously, though, why wouldn’t there be more in the sideboard? In the past, we’ve grown accustomed to looking at decks with a full range of removal accessible by Cunning Wish in the sideboard. Even if it’s not that preferrable in the maindeck, why wouldn’t the sideboard have more for particular problem matchups? I think it lies in the strength of the deck’s basic plan.

There are enough basic lands that most Workshop openings don’t threaten decisive victory, unless it’s just busted and you lack a FoW (or they overwhelm the lone FoW), in which case there’s not much to be done about it no matter how you build your deck. Even when they go Workshop, Trinisphere, second turn Juggernaut, Oath still appears early enough to answer the attack. It’s a prime example of JP’s* adage that the best “answer” is winning the game.

* : I think he might be the first to say it; there’s no citation database for Magic sayings, unfortunately. (I’d make one except I’m busy.)

Control Magic is the clear exception. This is quite probably a concession to the mirror in the minds of most of those who employed it.

The “rule-making” cards find a considerable home here in the sideboard. The most confusing one here is Chalice of the Void. Since obviously it can’t be set to two, the most powerful setting is probably one to block Goblin Welder, and this looks more likely when you spot that most of the Chalice decks also do not use Ground Seal.

While I was completely mystified by Stroke of Genius and Extract, but I can see some logic in the other choices. Claws of Gix and Spawning Pit each let you dispose of your own creatures to prevent an opponent’s Oath activation. Tormod’s Crypt was the most popular of these misfit cards, and obviously has merit against Welder decks of all stripes, as well as the side effect of providing Worldgorger Dragon insurance.

* : The consensus build is made by listing all cards played in the analyzed builds from greatest to least by number of decks that included them, and taking the top sixty maindeck and fifteen sideboard cards.

This Oath consensus build is 100% card-for-card identical to the Meandeck build originally introduced, despite over a dozen other individuals making Top 8s. I was totally not expecting this. I thought to myself as I made the table “alright! Engineered Explosives, TinkerColossus, and maybe a second dual land – these are subtleties that might actually make the deck better”. Then the crushing truth hit me: almost everyone won on the Meandeck skeleton.

When I did this type of breakdown for 4C Control and Psychatog, I got a good mix of card choices that suggested there was no single, best way to build them. For Oath this side-by-side comparison inclines me to think that the more you deviate, the less likely it is to work. There may be marginal changes to be made, and obviously the sideboard is particularly ripe for changes whenever new or repopularized decks drift to the top of the field, but Oath is a deck with a lot of required favorites. Keep that in mind both when you’re building your version and planning for the opposition.
