Happy holidays, everyone!
If you’re like me, you’ve been procrastinating way too long on getting those last-second holiday gifts for friends and family. But unlike previous years, I’ve actually got a good reason as to why I’ll be scrambling around this weekend for an ugly Christmas sweater, overpriced stuffed animals, and socks that no one wants (I’m really good at Christmas shopping).
That reason – if the title of this article didn’t already give it away – is because I and many others at StarCityGames.com have been hard at work on SCG Tour 2018 Season One Updates. Let’s get to it!
Changes to Release Weekends
With the excitement for Rivals of Ixalan brewing and a return to Dominaria not too far behind it, release weekends continue to be some of the most exciting times of the year for Magic: The Gathering fans. In order to better spotlight the impact of new set releases on all three SCG Tour Open-supported formats, we have changed the main event of SCG Dallas (January 20 – 21) and SCG Atlanta (April 28 – 29) from Standard to Team Constructed (Standard, Modern, and Legacy). In addition to the format change for the main event, both of these Open Weekends will now also offer Standard, Modern, and Legacy Classics on their respective Sundays.
What won’t be changing, however, are the sweet playmats you’ll be receiving during each SCG Tour weekend! All participants in an SCG Tour 2018 Season One Standard Open or Classic will receive an exclusive playmat featuring Hostage Taker!
All participants in an SCG Tour 2018 Season One Modern Open or Classic will receive an exclusive playmat featuring the new Iconic Masters artwork for Oblivion Stone!
All participants in an SCG Tour 2018 Season One Legacy Open or Classic will receive an exclusive playmat featuring the Amonkhet Invocation version of Doomsday!
And for each team playing in SCG Dallas and SCG Atlanta? You’ll be receiving one of each playmat, of course! Registration for SCG Dallas starts today, and we have a history of selling out Team Constructed Opens rather quickly, so make plans to join us in The Big D on January 20 – 21 and register today!
Honoring Hunter Burton
Due to a miscommunication, we mistakenly ended up scheduling our March 10 – 11 SCG Tour Open Weekend in Dallas on the same weekend as The Hunter Burton Memorial Tournament, an annual event we’ve supported for years. Thankfully, the Hunter Burton Memorial Tournament organizers were willing to work with us to find a “win-win” solution for Texas Magic: The Gathering fans, which included changing their event date to Sunday, February 25 and a sizeable increase in SCG support. You can learn more about the Hunter Burton Memorial Tournament here!
Down to the Wire
Due to a venue conflict, the previously announced March 17 – 18 SCG Tour Open Weekend in Baltimore has been rescheduled for Season Two. The new date will be included as part of our SCG Tour 2018 Season Two schedule announcement, but rest easy, Baltimore Magic: The Gathering fans, because we’re still heading to Charm City for a Team Constructed Open Weekend at the Baltimore Convention Center on May 5 – 6! You can learn more about that event here!
SCG Seasonal Rewards Receive Face Lift
I’ve said it once and I’ll say it until I’m blue in the face: when you speak, we listen. We got a lot of feedback from SCG Tour players on our 2017 SCG Tour Seasonal Point Leader prizes and things are changing in a big way in 2018!
Here’s what we previously offered:
