Ever drafted Mirrodin-Mirrodin-Darksteel before? I did!
A LOT!
During my senior year of high school, I drafted MMD three times a day, four days a week at my local store. I couldn’t get enough of the format because the decks were so much fun to draft!
- Would I get to draft the fifteen-land Affinity deck with seven artifact lands?
- How about the Tel-Jilad and all of their anti-artifact cards like Oxidize and Deconstruct?
- Or possibly the Leonin and all their synergies with equipment?
The possibilities were endless, and the format never got stale for me—and I did over 100 drafts of the format to prepare for my first Grand Prix Top 8!
Wait! That was nine years ago?
My God am I old…
But one thing that never changed for me while drafting MMD was the feeling I got every time I reached for one of those Darksteel packs. Because every time I started to crack one, I was hoping for one of two things:
And I never.
Ever.
Opened one.
100+ drafts. No Swords.
What kind of sick joke was this?!?!
Well, the good thing is that I’ve got a shot to redeem myself:
Welcome back to the party old friends! It has been a while since I’ve lost to you!
Modern Masters is shaping up to be one heck of a set, and Sword of Fire and Ice and Sword of Light and Shadow are just icing on the cake. These may not have seen a lot of play in Modern yet, but I won’t be surprised when they do. We’ve seen the power of Swords before.
There are two things that I’m really looking forward to with Sword of Fire and Ice and Sword of Light and Shadow:
#1) C-U-B-E!
As most of you know, I live in Seattle, Washington. Seattle has a fantastic player base of highly skilled competitive players like Steven Birklid, Travis Woo, Jesse Hampton, Mike Thompson, Brian Wong, Jon Loucks, and a lot of WOTC employees. Guess what we all have in common:
We. Love. To. Cube.
How much do we like to Cube, you ask?
We have a Cube league!
We keep statistics. We have an MVC of the league. We have a LVC of the league. We take this Cube stuff seriously!
If you like to Cube as much as we do, you know that Sword of Fire and Ice and Sword of Light and Shadow are quite difficult to find. Thankfully, that has just been made a whole lot easier for everyone because there’s nothing I love more than forcing White Weenie and suiting up Figure of Destiny with something a little more powerful.
And if your cube doesn’t have both Figure of Destiny and Swords to equip it with, we need to have a talk!
