Pick 1 I took Moonglove Extract to keep my options open for the next packs,
since no card was that powerful (ex: Peppersmoke), or they somehow forced commitment
(Fallowsage). I prefered Moonglove Extract and hold my options, rather than going
Green right away with Incremental Growth.

Picks 2, 3, and 4 I just took the best card. By Pick 5 I figured I
wouldn’t be U/W Merfolk, and by Pick 6 (with the Giant lord) I thought I could move
into the Elves and Giants archetype.

Pick 7 there was a very late Steambed Aquitects, but I only had Summon the School
to go with it, and I alreay had four good Red and Green cards, plus I had a
pick here.

Pick 16 I just took the only card that would probably make it into my deck at this
point, even though I wasn’t clearly happy about it.

Pick 19 I considered splashing or moving into a Treefolk theme, but this ended up in
the sideboard and I settled for Green/Red.

Round 1 I played versus Blue/Black Merfolk.

Game 1 he started with Angler, Aquitects, Douser, and Douser. I made turn
4 Huntmaster and turn 5 Incendiary Command, getting a three-for-one as
the Aquitects had attacked the previous turn. He had a third
Silvergill Douser, but I followed with turn 6 Sunrise Sovereign, and turn
7 Glarewielder plus Kithkin Daggerdare, which was enough to force the
concession.

I sided in Hurly Burly and Thorntooth Witch for extra removal, since I can
afford to wait for the Thorntooth Witch to kill the Dousers.

Game 2 he mulliganed to six, and I to five. He got a better start and
dropped me to 13. He had Angler, Douser, Aquitects. Meanwhile I was building,
as I got a good draw for five cards. I killed the Douser, and I had a
Daggerdare that allowed me to go on offense with the random 3/3 guys I
had. I started forcing damage through, and getting decent creature trades
thanks to Daggerdare, especially in the turns where he had no mana for Angler. I
never stopped attacking, and there was a turn where he had two 1/1
Faeries behind to chump block, since he had attacked with two creatures the
previous turn to put me to 8. I never got to know if he had something, as I
drew a sideboarded Hurly Burly to kill the Faeries and attack for the win.

Round 2 I played against Mono Red Elementals splashing Mulldrifter.

Game 1 he killed my Huntmaster with Lash Out, and Flamekin Spitfire with
Tarfire, as retribution for the Lignify I cast on his Smokebraider to slow him
down. The only creature I had in my hand was a Daggerdare, which I didn’t
cast because I had Incendiary Command. He only had a Cauterwailing Boggart
attacking me, so I held onto the Command for a while. One turn he played a 3/3 and my
life was a little above ten. I figured I could wait no more, so I used
Command to kill the Boggart, and also forced us to cycle our hands… Mine was 3 lands
and the Daggerdare, so it put me back in the game. Our next creatures traded.
The key moment was when he had Flamekin Bladewhirl and Inner-Flame
Igniter plus the Lignified Smokebraider, on eight lands. I only had Seedguide
Ash, and I figured if he drew the 9th land it would always be bad for me, so I
attacked, holding on my Gilt-Leaf Ambush. He attacked me back, and I played
Ambush, hoping just to get the Igniter, but won the clash and took the
Bladewhirl down as well. Since he was at zero cards in hand, I don’t think it
was necessary, but I just needed to take out the Igniter before he drew the 9th
land.

Game 2 I mulliganed and he had a fast start of Soulbright Flamekin,
Inner-Flame Igniter, Cauterwailing Boggart. That took me more than half of
my life, but there was one attack where I Tarfired his Boggart and made some
profitable blocks, getting a four-for-three and clearing his side of the board while
keeping a creature on mine. The problem was that we were both left with very
little, and a couple of turns passed with nothing happening… until he
played a Mulldrifter. Frown.

Game 3 it’s his time to mulligan and my time to have a good start. Turn
2 Wren’s Run Vanquisher, and turn 3 Lignify for his Smokebraider. The
Vanquisher dealt all the damage this game, up until the point where he had to
triple block it. The situation: he had the Lignified
Smokebraider, 3 life, and almost no hand. I was at 14 life, with a creature easily
blocked by the 0/4 Wall, holding lands and Tarfire. The game went again into
topdecking mode, but I had life advantage and many more lands in play. I just
didn’t want him to draw Mulldrifter. All of our next cards traded with each
other, the exception being the Wild Ricochet I sided in, but it could also
be a game winning if he cast removal or a Tarfire. Just when my Seedguide
Ash was ready to attack into his Faultgrinder, I drew Incendiary Command for
the final points.

I split the finals.

See you next week!
