Pick 2: The person next to me took an uncommon, so I got to look at all the
commons in this booster. Not much to choose from. The rare is good – it won me a
round in my last draft two minutes ago – and Pestermite is the best common. For me,
Garruk is one of the Top 3 cards in the set Pick 1. It’s worth being in Green,
and it’s also much better on turn 3, thanks to Leaf Glider.

Pick 3: Usually I don’t see this as a signal to go Blue, since most of the times
there are just absurd packs. However, this time all the uncommons and rare are in
the pack, so two people picked two commons over Douser. I think I have to go
for it. There’s only one scenario where this can be deceiving: Foil something
and Mulldrifter.

Pick 5: I almost timed out here. I wasn’t sure between the Vivid land and the
Elvish Promenade. Promenade can be ridiculous in the right deck… I
went for it as I already had two Elves and one Overrun effect.

Pick 8: Peppermoke is better than those two Blue cards, and after Douser Pick 3, the
next 3 packs were dry on Blue.

Pick 16: Usually, I’m very against this. After the first booster, I know
I’m Green and I have one Peppermoke and one Silvergill Douser. I opened a
pack with nothing Green and nothing Blue. My options are to get another
single card off-color – Lash Out – have a very weak in-colors pick –
Kithkin Daggerdare – or gamble a little more on Black, despite both cards
requiring commitment to Black mana. At this point I only have a
Peppersmoke. I usually go for the card that helps me better with my mana,
but this time I picked Dread over Weed Strangle.

Black did come, both in the second and third booster, so the Dread was a nice
power addition to my deck. However I was ready to bench it if I couldn’t
play Black, or if my Black didn’t warrant enough Swamps to support him.

Pick 20: I know people love splashing Aethersnipe. I also know people don’t
understand me picking and playing with Gilt-Leaf Seer. While I don’t want to
go over Seer again, I don’t think splashing Aethersnipe should happen in a
deck where you’re playing with cards costing triple Black and double Green.

Round 1 I played against Green/Black Treefolk with Final Revels, which is
my favorite card for the Treefolk archetype.

Game 1 I got all the power out. I made Garruk on turn 5 and created a token. I
had a Moonglove Winnower in play too. He played Final Revels, giving
everyone +2/+0 to try to kill Garruk. I blocked and traded with two of his
creatures, and played Peppersmoke on the other. At his end of turn the board
was down to my Garruk and nothing else. I untapped, made a token, and played Dread. He never
found a solution for the Dread, and he was also behind on the board.

Game 2 I drew only seven Swamps as my lands, playing only half of the
cards I held. His start was also punishing for a color-screwed opponent: turns
3 and 4 Battlewand Oak, and turn 5 Bog-Strider Ash.

Game 3 he only drew a Swamp on turn 6. By then I already had a Garruk
and Bog-Strider Ash in play.

Round 2 I played against a Red/White/Green deck.

Game 1 I played Dreamspoiler Witches turn 3 which generated too much
card advantage: two Peppersmokes killed two creatures, and the turn where he
played a Champion creature, Eyeblight’s Ending killed both the big creature
and the one-toughness guy, forcing the Champion to be sacrificed.

Game 2 he did not draw one of his main colors.

I split the finals.

See you tomorrow!
