Pick 2: From what I’ve seen, I like Changeling Hero a lot less than many people
here, at least this early in the initial picks. I’m not a big fan of the
Champion ability. This leave us with Sentinels of Glen Elendra, decent though
unspectacular and far from putting me into Blue as there are many better
Blue cards; or Smokebraider, gambling on Elementals. Sentinels seemed a
little safer.
Pick 3: Some playables, but very weak quality. Igniter was the best card, even
though I didn’t pick Smokebraider, but the rest was just so weak.
Pick 4: The three good cards are Green, White, and Blue. I didn’t want to spread
myself over four colors in four picks, so I took Whirlpool Whelm, arguably
weaker than Leaf Gilder and Plover Knights.
I finished the first booster set into Blue because of the mid picks, but
still unsure about my second color. I had a Shriekmaw and two Red
playables.
Pick 16: Merrow Harbinger wouldn’t be very good in my deck, so I dimissed it.
Peppermoske would’ve been my pick here if I knew I was Blue/Black, but I
only had a Shriekmaw so I played it safe and took Moonglove Extract.
Pick 17: Of course, if I knew this I would have taken Peppermoke before for sure.
Dreamspoiler Witches is very good in Blue/Black, so I added it to my
Shriekmaw.
Pick 35: I considered for a long time splashing Arbiter of Knollridge… it was
definitely a possibility.
Round 1 I played versus Red/Blue good elementals deck with lots of synergy,
fueled by Smokebraider. He had the engine – Soulbright Flamekin,
Smokebraider, Inner-Flame Igniter, Ceaseless Searblades – plus the good
creatures – Mulldrifter, Aethersnipe, Guile. I lost 2-1… the truth is he gave
me many windows to win in all games, but I could only steal the second one, where I
stabilized at one life and then he drew two or three lands in a row. I
had a Footbottom Feast at the perfect, game-winning time.
