The person feeding me was Green for sure, probably Green/Red, so this was an
easy draft. I had the choice to try to jump to Blue/White Merfolk with pick 4,
but I decided to continue with Black as I already had a Marsh Flitter and
Peppersmoke, and there was also Weed Strangle. My other concern was to try to
lower the mana curve, but I never had the chance as I kept seeing powerful
cards costing five mana. I debated whether to play 18 or 19 lands in this
deck. I stuck with 18, but 19 probably would’ve been correct. I thought I
had enough early clash cards to dig for a land in case it was needed.
Round 1 I played versus a Green/White/Black good stuff deck.
Game 1 I was overpowered. If you told me that would happen before the game, I wouldn’t have
believed you. We both reached five mana on turn 5, but his spells were better
than mine: Cloadgoat Ranger, Shriekmaw. Incremental Growth. I drew none of
my five mana spells, just the 2/1 and 2/2 creatures.
Game 2 I played a tempo game and raced him. If you told me that before the game, I also
wouldn’t have believed you. I played Deeptread Merrow on turn 2, attacked a
couple of times, bounced his first creature and attacked again, then played
Shriekmaw when he replayed it, and kept attacking with the fear creature as
I already had him on 14.
Game 3 was ridiculous. I kept with three lands on the draw. After
clashing non-land cards to the bottom with Broken Ambitions and Paperfin
Rascal, and cycling Footbottom Feast, I missed several land drops afterwards.
After falling too far behind on tempo, I drew lands… but it reached a point
where I had 4 Island and 1 Swamp and I was holding Liliana Vess and two
Hornet Harassers, so I didn’t play much this game. The turn where I had
mana to actually play my spells, I was at a one-digit life total and facing
Cloadgoat Ranger and tokens, Changeling Titan with two +1+1 counters, and
Bog-Strider Ash with three +1/+1 counters. Sometimes, it’s just not
possible.
