I think this draft is all about Pick 5. I’ve discussed enough drafts where Pick 1 is
Pestermite versus a good Elf card. Pick 5 I could’ve picked Weed Strangle, and taken
it as a sign that Black was open, but when I’m drafting Elves, I think it’s
important to draft as many Elves as you can so you don’t have to play with
non-Elf creatures (despite them being solid creatures in their own right). The curious thing is I
could’ve had a really good Black deck, but only because I opened it and it came from
the left: Profane Command, Final Revels, a second Weed Strangle, Eyeblight’s
Ending, and a pair of Warren Pilferers. From my right, packs 1 and 3, I barely saw
any quality Black cards after the Pick 5 Weed Strangle. I could’ve finished with
a stronger Green/Black deck with a medium sized Elves theme, or (as I finished) with a
totally thematic Elves deck.
Round 1 I played against Blue/Red.
I won game 1 at one life, in a game that took forever. Our clocks were low, close
to 12 minutes remaining. As with all long games, someone will topdeck
better, and this time it was me. Game 2 I played exactly three spells:
an Elvish Handservant I sided in, Gilt-Leaf Seer, and Nath’s Elite. Despite
activating the Seer a couple of times when he wasn’t attacking, I always saw
two lands. I drew an Oblivion Ring the turn before I died to a pair of
fliers. Game 3 I had the offensive start with Leaf Glider, Kithkin
Daggerdare and two Nath’s Elite. He slowed me with a pair of Mudbutton
Torchrunners. I saved one Elite with a Daggerdare activation plus Surge of
Thoughtweft, but the Elite would do no more harm this game, as it was
bounced by Aethersnipe and then when I replayed it was killed with Consmuing
Bonfire. Entering the late game, I drew five lands in a row – not exaggerating,
unfortunately – and then scooped. The first land came when I could’ve drawn a
Gilt-Leaf Ambush after a clash, but I opted to put it down to the bottom. I could’ve drawn Ambush, played
it, and clashed one land to the bottom, but I would still draw the next four, and
a pair of 1/1s would probably not get me there. Truth told, my deck was
a lot worse in topdeck wars against Blue ones, and I was lucky to win game
1 that way.
