I tried to draft cards once again, and once again they were completely cut off. Fortunately I got on the Green train just early enough and ended up with a deck that was passable, but decidedly unspectacular. I generally don’t like splashing for Dragons without much manafixing, but in a deck as mediocre as this, I had to.
Round 1 I played against a Green deck that didn’t do much of anything. Game 1 I had turn 2 Magus of the Library on the draw. I only got to activate it once before he Rift Bolted it, but that was enough. I played Gaea’s Anthem turn 3, and Suspended Nantuko Shamans on 4 and 5 before playing Clockwork Hydra. He just couldn’t keep up with the card advantage because he had to discard his big spells early to find land with Greenseeker. Game 2 he had another awkward Greenseeker draw, in which he had to use Fungal Reaches to cast and activate it. This let me get some damage in early so that I could kill a guy and get in for exactly lethal after he took control of the board with Havenwood Wurm and Soul Collector.
Round 2 I lost game 1 to a Spirt Looped Dust Elemental followed by Teferi’s Moat. Not much I could do against that, but I held out hope because my opponent played a lot of bad cards that game. Game 2 I started with a decent curve, but was missing a second Green to play Sporesower Thallid and Penumbra Spider. Eventually I drew the Forest, but by then he had Spirit Loop on Crookclaw Transmuter. So I played Magus of the Jar and Snapbacked the Transmuter in response to activating it. With the Magus I found Premature Burial for his Castle Raptors and he conceded to that. Game 3 he played turn 1 Sage of Epityr, but couldn’t find a Plains. That meant he had no answer to my Clockwork Hydra which first killed his creatures, then killed him when I Snapbacked his Giant Oyster.
I was very happy to split the finals with this deck.
