It’s rare that Red is as wide open as it was in this draft. I don’t think I’ve ever seen Grapeshot make a lap before. Taking lots of Red cards left me without a second color going into pack 2, so the Damnation that was staring back at me was pretty convenient. Pack 2 was pretty bad, but I knew I’d be getting good Red in pack 3 and it did not disappoint. I was looking for Grinning Ignuses to go with my two mass removal spells and Storm spells, but it’s just not good enough for me to take it over Fomori Nomad or Riddle of Lightning.
Round 1 I played against a good White/Green deck. My opening hand consisted of Chromatic Star, Damnation, Ib Halfheart, and four lands. I didn’t play a spell until the Damnation on turn 6 because I had to wait for his Riftmarked Knight to come out from suspension, and by then I’d been hit down to six. The game looked pretty good after the Damnation though. Unfortunately a couple turns before I was going to kill him he drew Conflagrate with just enough mana to kill me after I had to cast an Orcish Cannonade. Game 2 the board stalled for a while while I had Damnation in hand. He used all his action to get through my guys, so eventually I wrathed with a hand full of spells to his two cards. Game 3 I had the Damnation again, but he played around it this time, making the game pretty awkward. I decided to make eight guys with Ignus and Empty the Warrens before I Damnationed, because it looked like he might not have much action, and it costs me only one card to put a lot of stuff out there for him to deal with before I Wrath. I alpha struck a few times with the goblins, and eventually Wrathed away his pro Red Riftmarked Knight and Hedge Troll with him at eight and me at five. From there I was able to Riddle him to four showing a Nomad, then get through the last four by Cradling one of his creatures, and tapping the other with Midnight Charm.
Round 2 was pretty anticlimactic. He didn’t play a third land in the first game, and in the second game I got conveniently stuck on three lands with Damnation in hand, so he played out his hand and I was able to draw a land before too much damage was done.
I drew the finals because it was getting late.
