My deck may have turned out better if I took Corrupt but I don’t think I can justify that because Plumeveil is better (and in better colors). I was obviously kicking myself after the next few picks. Perhaps I should’ve taken Rune-Cervin Rider with my third pick. I took Mercy Killing because it’s not much worse and it keeps my options open. I felt confident that White was the right place to be after the fifth pick Safehold Elite even though there were no cards for me in the rest of the pack. I had two tough picks in pack 3 both involving Ballynock Trapper. Part of me wanted to take the Trapper there but I felt that he’s much better in an aggressive deck and doesn’t fit as well into the plan of building my deck around Firespout like the other two do.

In the first round I played against a Black/Green deck with Midnight Banshee and Deity of Scars. I won the first game with a Firespout that killed none of my creatures and all of his. In the second game I removed eight lands with Endless Horizons on turn 4 but he had Wickerbough Elder to blow it up. We played a long close game which was often quite complicated because of his Blowfly Infestation. I was a little flooded but drew into my Flame Jab just in time. There was a point in this game in which I had 14 cards in my deck all of which were spells. I was able to answer his Midnight Banshee with Mercy Killing and then his Blowfly Infestation forced him to kill all of the tokens. I was fortunate that he didn’t draw his Deity this game because I wouldn’t have had an answer. When I thought he was out of spells I dropped Restless Apparition and finished him off.

In the second round I played against a good Red Green deck. In the first game I had Endless Horizons and Flame Jab in my opening hand which led to a lot of Jabbing. In one turn I Firespouted away his Boartusk Liege Scuzzback Marauders and Noggle Bridgebreaker and finished off the Liege and Marauders with Flame Jabs. He recovered with the 3/3 token Retrace card [Savage Conception – Craig] but I had Nucklavee for the Firespout and finished him off. Game 2 I got his Noggle Bandit with Plumeveil then held him off with the Plumeveil and Shielddare while getting in for two with Glamer Spinners and drawing 12 lands. Eventually he decided he had to go for it and played a bunch of creatures and Howl of the Night Pack. One of the eight cards in my hand was Firespout and he conceded.

This deck was a lot of fun but I split the finals in order to go to bed… sucks to be a working stiff.

Until tomorrow…

Rich
