This draft was interesting because of what was being passed. In pack 2 my deck looked very good but it felt like it could’ve been even better if I’d made my way into Blue White somehow. There were also far too many good cards going far too late like Barkshell Blessings Gloomwidows and Wickerbough Elders. To preempt any questions I would much rather have had Puncture Blast but it’s hard to pass 15 tickets on Magic Online.

In deckbuilding I considered splashing the Recumbent Bliss but I figured my deck is powerful enough and I’d prefer to make it as consistent as possible.

Round 1 I played against against a pretty bad deck but had something of a struggle winning. Game 1 I played Figure turn 1. Pump turn 2. Flask turn 3. Pump turn 4. He then Biting Tethers it and sac’ed his Flask to make it huge turn 6. He played two other spells this game; both Slippery Boggles. Games 2 and 3 I played lands and spells and nothing ridiculous happened. He just got run over by vastly superior cards.

Round 2 I played against another Red Green deck which had some White for something. In the first game I played Nettle Sentinel turn 1 Tattermunge Maniac on turn 2 and Blessinged through his first blocker. He played some Cinder Pyromancers but nothing to stop the little dudes. He eventually Last Breathed the Nettle Sentinel. Meanwhile I was drawing lots of red cards and only three Forests. I did have the Trip Noose to keep getting my guy through. The game became close when he played Thunderblust which I had to tap every turn. I had Puncture Bolt for it if I ever drew a Mountain… Eventually the Maniac and the Twinblade Slasher got him to 1 when I finally drew a Mountain to poke him with Flame Jab. Game 2 I played Maniac turn 1 Puncture Bolted his Safehold Elite turn 2. He Puncture Blasted the Maniac on turn 3but this time I followed up with Gloomwidow and Wickerbough Elder. He conceded to the two 3/3s with 4 lands including all of his colors in play.

Round 3 I played against a good Mono Black deck. I had a good start in the first game but he was able to stop my initial rush with a couple Unmakes. I proceeded to draw lots of lands while he made some Gravegill Axesharks and killed me with them. I had another good draw in the second game and this time he couldn’t keep up. I managed to throw this game away however. I made the mistake of trying to play around a card that he would already have cast if he had it. I played my third Mountain leaving me with one card in hand a Kulrath Knight so that I could attack with Figure of Destiny and Wickerbough Elder putting him to one. I was thinking that I’d play around Incremental Blight this way. He had Midnight Banshee and a chump blocker then Gloomlance for my Kulrath Knight. If I had simply played the Knight he wouldn’t have been able to stop me with the Banshee and I would have been able to finish him off.

Until tomorrow…

Rich
