There were some picks in this draft that I’m unsure about. The first of these was my second pick. There weren’t any particularly good cards. I could’ve taken Thistledown Duo which would’ve meant giving up my first pick if I were to play it; or the Devoted Druid which I would only play if I’m Green (obviously) but is much more likely to be in the same deck as the Redcap. I thought about taking the Bloodmark Mentor with the fourth pick and trying to get into the Mono Red deck that everyone is so fond of but it’s always hard for me to take such an inferior card so early with no real signal to go with it. I wish I had taken the Blowfly Infestation with my fifth pick it would’ve been absolutely perfect in the deck I ended up with. On average the Axeshark is going to be much better but it is so replaceable and uninspiring that I should’ve gone with the potential bomb in the Blowfly. After that I took some mediocre cards from some uninspiring packs. The draft became fairly simple after the Incremental Blight put me solidly into Black/Red and I was able to take the best card in those colors the rest of the way.

In the first round I played against a Blue White deck that was pretty unimpressive. He played lots of different 2/2s for three and four mana and not much else. I won the first game by blowing up a bunch of his 2/2s with Hatchet Bully. I could never stop his Ballynock Cohort in the second game and after it hit me a few times he played Thoughtweft Gambit to get in for exactly lethal with it and a bunch of other 2/2s. I had a pretty good draw in the third game with Ashenmoor Gouger turn 3 Murderous Redcap turn 4 and Incremental Blight on turn 5… this game was not the least bit close.

Round 2 I played against a mono White deck. I lost the first game because I drew 6 Mountains and a single Swamp to go with the Incremental Blight and Soul Snuffers either of which would have effectively wrathed him. In the second game I missed some land drops and fell behind early. I fought back with some Cultbrand Cinders but he played Runed Halo on them right as I was taking over the game and going to start attacking. This bought him enough time to play Cenn’s Enlistment a few times and start making lots of guys with Rhys while I drew lots of land and none of my 10 ways to kill Rhys. An extremely frustrating match to say the least.

Until tomorrow…

Rich
