I wasn’t really sure where I was supposed to be in this draft. I tried to keep my options open with my first few picks. It didn’t feel like there were any signals coming only weak packs. I took the Firespout in pack two because I knew that whatever deck I ended up with at worst I’d be able to splash the Firespout and Power of Fire. Perhaps I should’ve taken Farhaven Elf with my next pick to solidify the splash plan but it felt like White could be coming in both directions since I didn’t pass much pack one and perhaps the Aethertow meant something. I was rewarded for that pick with the Seedcradle Witch and that finally gave me some direction. I was still planning on splashing Red until I got to deckbuilding but thanks to some late picks in Eventide I didn’t need to.

Sapseep Forest
Curse of Chains
Barkshell Blessing
Mudbrawler Raiders
Juvenile Gloomwidow
Aethertow
Foxfire Oak
Safewright Quest
Prison Term
Tower Above
Tatterkite
Seedcradle Witch
Spawnwrithe
Inquisitor’s Snare
Raven’s Run Dragoon
Illuminated Folio
Snakeform
Wickerbough Elder
Rendclaw Trow
Grounding Pouncer
Hoof Skulkin
Cenn’s Enlistment
Shorecrasher Mimic
Cenn’s Enlistment
Desecrator Hag
Tilling treefolk

Round 1 I played against a decent looking Blue White deck. In the first game we both had slow draws but he couldn’t stop my Mudbrawler Raiders until he played Windbrisk Raptor. I had Curse of Chains to shut it down but he played Deepchannel Mentor to keep attacking. I was able to win the race by playing Aethertow on his Mentor and attacking for exactly enough before his lifegain from the big bird got out of hand. Game 2 we both had reasonable draws but I had a bunch of lands and Seedcradle Witch while he had less land and Mistmeadow Witch. It was a slow process but he could never keep up because I always had twice as many Witch activations available to me.

Round 2 I played against a good mono-Red deck. The first game ended up being pretty close even though he hit me for 10 on turn 4 with the Red/White Mimic and Boggart Arsonists. I was able to kill all his guys except the Arsonists when he attacked into my Conspired Barkshell Blessing but I didn’t draw any of my many ways to stop the Arsonists from finishing me off. I boarded in my Red package because I figured the Firespout would beat him singlehandedly if I could cast it and I took out a bunch of cards that were just far too slow against him like Illuminated Folio and Foxfire Oak. In the second game I played three Forests and a Spawnwrithe. He played three Mountains and then conceded. The third game ended up being pretty close despite the fact that he didn’t play a third land on turn 3. I couldn’t take advantage of this fact because I kept a hand of Forest Plains Mountain Firespout Snakeform Inquisitor’s Snare and Shorecrasher Mimic. He had scar for my Mimic and I couldn’t put any pressure on because I just kept drawing lands. On that topic I got flooded nearly every game of this draft and didn’t once draw one of the Cenn’s Enlistments. Eventually we got into a creature stalemate which I broke by making two of my guys 4 toughness with the Hoof Skulkin and Firespouting away the rest of the board. This left him with no board and no hand and on a two-turn clock. A situation which he was unable to recover from.

In the third round I played a couple miserable games against an excellent mono-Black deck. In the first game I played some dudes then he played Incremental Blight and Gloomlance to kill them all. In the second game I once again played some dudes but he had the 2/2 Ravenous Rats Hedge-Mage and Murderous Redcap to put me way behind on cards again in addition to my mulligan. I seemed to stabilise and it looked like I might be able to come back but he put those thoughts to bed with a pair of Corrupts aimed at me.

Looking at this deck it seems pretty good but every game I won in the draft was such a struggle although I think they all would’ve been easy victories (except the finals) if I ever drew one of the Cenn’s Enlistments.

Do you think I should’ve played the Red main? Or what direction should I have gone in the draft? Share your thoughts.

Until tomorrow…

Rich
