I missed the first pick of this draft but fortunately I still ended up with Tower Above. I took this as a Green signal and went with it. Actually the best cards in the next two packs were both Green. I took the Flame Javelin from pack two with the intention of playing it as a six mana removal spell. From pack 3 I was just looking to get some quick dudes like Nettle Sentinels and perhaps some Monstrifies. The game plan changed when I got the two retrace bombs. They made it so that I had a good aggressive deck with an excellent late game which is exactly what I want a Limited deck to look like.
Round 1 I played against a reasonable looking Black White deck. Game 1 he played turn 2 Inkfathom Infiltrator and turn 3 Needle Specter. I had Flame Jab but no Mountain. I was able to race with Nettle Sentinel and Hungry Spriggans. He didn’t have a good answer for the Spriggans and they eventually forced him to make some bad blocks. He was at one and I had Flame Jab in the yard when I ran out of gas. I drew a Mountain and a land the turn before he could finish me off with the Infiltrator. Game 2 was about even when I played Call to the Skybreaker. Somehow I managed to lose when I drew a bunch of mediocre spells and he drew all his best ones. Game 3 I drew Call the Skybreaker and lots of lands which left him without a chance.
Round 2 I played against what seemed to be a mono Red deck splashing Biting Tether because he was short on playables. Neither game was particularly close. Game 1 I played Nettle Sentinel on turn 1 and Hungry Spriggan on turns 3 and 4. He conceded when I had Barkshell Blessing to get through his Crag Puca. Game 2 he held me off for a few turns with Biting Tether on my Raven’s Run Dragoon but when that went away I cleared the way for some 2/2s with two Flame Javelins with the help of Hag Hedge-mage.
I split the finals because I was late for a very important date.
Until tomorrow…
