Welcome back to Drafting With Me!
I know I’ve missed doing this and I hope you’ve missed me too. This is going to be an interesting change from previous editions of this column. The change is that I now have a job and haven’t been able to play as much Magic as I’d like recently. In fact this 8-4 draft I played is about as competitive as my current Magic playing gets aside from the occasional cube drafts with the pro tour champions and future hall of famers living down the street (Happily I’ve been promised time off for Worlds). What this means is that I’ll be more receptive to the opinions of the forums and I won’t dismiss things out of hand (like I did with the forum love affair with Infiltrator’s Magemark). I think we can both learn a lot from this series so here we go…
In the first round I played against a mediocre Red Green deck. I won the first game by making a giant Canker Abomination then I Gloomlanced a couple of his dudes. He had a pretty fast start in the second game but got shut down by Rendclaw Trow and then I gained all of the life back by playing Voracious Hatchling and then using Barkshell Blessing when he double blocked.
The second round I played against a mono-White deck which seemed pretty bad if he didn’t draw his rares. I was quite flooded in the first game but his draw looked pretty bad as well. He played Apothecary Initiate on the first turn and followed up with Cenn’s Enlistment on turn 4 and Lurebound Scarecrow on turn 5 while I just had Voracious Hatchling and Wingrattle Scarecrow with Gloomlance in hand. On turn 6 he attacked with the Scarecrow and left the rest back looking pretty manascrewed. I decided to attack with both of my guys expecting him to double-block the Hatchling so that I could Gloomlance his other guy and kill the Scarecrow. Obviously he had Aethertow to punish a horrible play on my part and I was set back so far that I had absolutely no chance when he followed up with the Black/White Liege on his turn. I won the second game by playing Ballynock Cohort on turn 3 and Ballynock Trapper turn 4 getting in for some damage and then the turn before he could take over the game with the Black/White Liege I had double Barkshell Blessing to tap all three of his blockers and get in for exactly enough to kill him. Game 3 we both got flooded but he had Cenn’s Enlistment to make a bunch of guys and then Mirrorweave to turn them all into monsters while I just had a bunch of lands.
Until tomorrow…
Rich
