In January I started my first job. Unfortunately because of my location and schedule I wasn’t able to attend Pro Tour: Kuala Lumpur and I won’t be able to play any live tournaments for the foreseeable future. Thankfully this hasn’t reduced my desire to draft so here I am. Hopefully I’ll still be able to provide you with quality drafts.
I’ve also begun to do some casual gaming something I never would’ve done before. My favorite format is Pauper Prismatic Singleton. If you’ve got a deck together feel free to challenge me (rhoaen) on MTGO some time.
Without further ado here is the first draft of many in my return to Drafting With Rich!
1st Pick: I wasn’t sure about this one. None of the options were particularly exciting and I’d been told White was underdrafted on MTGO so I decided to go with the best White card over Dreamspoiler Witches since there was another Faerie card in the pack.
2nd Pick: I’m not a big fan of Incremental Growth and I am a big fan of Streambed Aquitects.
22nd Pick: Most of my picks had been pretty automatic up to here. I think I made a mistake taking Ponder over Surge of Thoughtweft. I figured I needed the consistency Ponder would provide and wouldn’t end up with many Kithkin in my deck but I was wrong about both of those things.
33rd Pick: I wasn’t sure about this one and I figured my deck was more controlling so the Nevermaker would be effective at holding them off until I could get my tappers online and I wouldn’t be the aggressor often enough to make full use of the Bombardier.
37th Pick: Although I was leaning towards Merfolk earlier I didn’t have any good ways to tap the Schoolmaster repeatedly so I gave up on that plan and took the Banneret since I needed more cheap creatures.
My deck ended up decent with a lot of removal for a Blue White deck but with almost no tribal synergy and no real theme for the deck.
Round 1 I played against a slow White Green deck with some bombs like Purity and Epic Proportions. In the first game I was without Blue mana for a long time but was able to hold him off with a Harrier and race a little with Changeling Hero. He played two Wren’s Run Vanquishers so I didn’t really have a choice but to trade with one of them. Eventually I found Blue mana and was able to hold off his Purity and Epic Proportionsed guy with tappers until I could find my Sower of Temptation and beat him with his own Purity. Game 2 I had a great draw and drew all of my Merfolk with the Reejerey. I spent a couple turns tapping down his team and alpha-striking and he was done for.
Round 2 I played against an Elemental deck that never played a Smokebraider or Banneret and I had two pretty good draws so I was able to attack very effectively through his awkward creatures and put him away before his card advantage from Mulldrifters could overwhelm me.
I split the finals.
