Pack 1 pick 1:

My Pick:

Three of next next four best cards in the pack (including the Scorpion) are Blue. I probably want to avoid that color.

Pack 1 pick 2:

Pack 1 pick 3:

My Pick:

I could pick Blazing Torch and stick to Red but the Scorpion is a lot better. It doesn’t mind so much as it could stay in the sideboard and I’m not sure I’d want the Torch in my deck anyway.

Pack 1 pick 5:

My Pick:

Not nearly as good in RB as it is in Mono Red but still probably better than Molten Ravager in a two-color deck.

Pack 1 pick 6:

Pack 1 pick 7:

My Pick:

Maybe I should just forget about my Black from now on.

Pack 2 pick 1:

My Pick:

With double Grunt already I have three options here: Thief Pyromancer and Slinger. I don’t like Pyromancer so much in an aggro deck as you have to send your guys inro the red zone and they often die by the time your 3/2 touches the board. Then the Thief has more potential as it does something on its own but so does Slinger and I’d like to pick Red cards over Black to keep my options open.

Pack 2 pick 2:

My Pick:

Pack 2 pick 3:

My Pick:

Curve is my problem right now and I already have several Goblins. Also I should be able to find ways to pump it (Slaughter Cry Teetering Peaks).

Pack 2 pick 4:

My Pick:

Not a card I like much but as far as curve is concerned it is still a card I need.

Pack 2 pick 5:

My Pick:

Pack 2 pick 6:

My Pick:

I love the Mongrel but the Expedition and the Boar are a lot better. Usually I’d pick the 3/2 by a fair margin but considering how high my curve is I’d rather pick the Enchantment this time.

My Pick:

A pair of Marauders would help the deck a lot but it would also make synergy far worse. Bushwhacker is good here but the 4/3 is a lot better and the 1/1 is very likely to wheel anyway.

Pack 3 pick 2:

My Pick:

In Mono Red Spire Barrage becomes one of the very best commons in the format.

Pack 3 pick 3:

My Pick:

I still don’t like this card much in the deck but there was nothing else I really wanted nor any card it seemed necessary to counterdraft.

My opponent opens with turn 3 River Boa and stops my relative beating quite easily. However I have turn 4 Bladetusk Boar and a pair of Teetering Peaks to put him on ten. I could play Mark of Mutiny on one of his guys for the win but I’m concerned about his five mana untapped which could be Arrow Volley Trap. I only attack with the Boar and he does play the expected trick. On the next turn I steal one of his guy and swing in for the wi… wait. Tap White tap Green Arrow Volley Trap #2. Ouch. Two points from killing him with Spire Barrage let’s move to game 2.

In the next he opens with Plains Swamp Swamp Plains. Landscrewed ? Nope just three colors. Turn 4 Emeria Angel gives me a good target for Mark of Mutiny and I win on turn 6.

In the final game he can hold the board with Gigantiformed creature but he chooses to race me instead. It’s not really a problem as the Mark of Mutiny and the Spire Barrage I’m holding make me win even if he has Arrow Volley Trap again. I’ve 7 Mountains on the board he’s on nine and I attack with just enough guys to put him on 7 even if he has the Trap again. Tanglesap. Ouch. I play a chump blocker and will win the next turn if he doesn’t have a pump spell or a piece of removal and he plays… Heartstabber Mosquito with kicker.

Until Friday…
