If you’re looking to improve your Limited game, this is the article series for you!

Pack 1 pick 1:

My Pick:

Infest and Thunder are close cards but Thunder fits more archetypes. Also the third best card Tar Fiend is also Black. It seems better as far as signals are concerned to pass two good Black cards and to go either Naya or 5cc.

Pack 1 pick 2:

My Pick:

Soul’s Fire is a close pick in Big Guys Naya and Resounding Silence in 5cc but Branching Bolt is the only card that’s excellent in both archetypes.

Pack 1 pick 3:

My Pick:

Capsule or Necropolis for 5cc or Nacatl for Naya? I rather like playing 5cc when I have bombs. This way as games are longer you have better chance to draw them. Also as a common was missing in each of the first two packs there are good chances that Naya is open.

Pack 1 pick 4:

My Pick:

Pack 1 pick 5:

My Pick:

Resounding Roar is good too but I already have two removal spells. I’d rather like to focus on guys now.

Pack 1 pick 6:

My Pick:

I haven’t picked a single White card so far. Therefore White has a good chance of being my third color and I’d better enjoy picking Gift or Obelisk over Steward or Sorcerer. Gift is a little better but I don’t have a fixer yet which pushes me to take the Obelisk. But I guess both of them are passable picks.

Pack 1 pick 7:

My Pick:

Even though the card is not good any five-power guy is fine when playing Drumhunter.

Pack 1 pick 8:

My Pick:

I am a little short of guys but Dragon Fodder would not be great in my deck while I should be able to reach 8 mana often to cycle the pump spell.

My Pick:

Close pick with Iguanar but I need a little more removal.

Pack 2 pick 3:

My Pick:

Pack 2 pick 4:

My Pick:

Not a great pick 4. I considered picking Bant Charm in case I could splash it but it is very unlikely and I need five-power guys for Drumhunter. I don’t consider Angelic Benediction an option. Indeed it is only good in a very aggressive deck and it is definitely not worth a splash.

Pack 2 pick 5:

My Pick:

Pack 2 pick 6:

My Pick:

Pack 2 pick 7:

My Pick:

I don’t really want to splash it but this is more likely to happen than me playing two Thorn-Thrash Viashino.

Pack 2 pick 8:

My Pick:

This pick is wrong. I should have taken Volcanic Submersion to use it after boarding versus Esper.

My Pick:

I am not splashing Plowbeast and as I seem to have enough playables so I rather like counter-drafting the 2/3.

Pack 2 pick 15:

My Pick:

I’m pretty happy with the deck so far… I’d just like to get a Rupture Spire so I can Cycle my two Resounding Thunders.

Pack 3 pick 1:

My Pick:

Fiery Fall may be both a removal spell and a mana fixer but Wild Leotau is a better card and it is great with Drumhunter.

Pack 3 pick 2:

My Pick:

I usually don’t like the card in aggro but I am short of two-drops and I have lots of expensive cards. Maybe I could even run a Swamp for the Thunders now.

Pack 3 pick 3:

My Pick:

I like Aven Squire better but as a splash it almost can’t be a turn 2 play. Therefore it’s no match for Leotau.

Pack 3 pick 4:

My Pick:

Pack 3 pick 5:

My Pick:

Maybe the best card in my deck considering how many big guys I am playing.

Pack 3 pick 6:

My Pick:

I am probably not even playing it but there is nothing good for me here.

Pack 3 pick 7:

My Pick:

Pack 3 pick 8:

My Pick:

I could have picked Rhox Bodyguard here but as I am not intending to play Ziggurat (too many expensive non-creature spells no white guys) and as I’ve Drumhunter and Soul’s Majesty I prefer picking the bigger guy.

Pack 3 pick 9:

My Pick:

Pack 3 pick 10:

My Pick:

I have enough playables now so I’d rather like to pick the sideboard card.

The deck is solid… it has removal spells fine fixers and card advantage. However the curve is not so good as I lack aggression when not drawing my Nacatls.

ROUND 1: Grixis
In the first game he has Kathari Screecher while I have three cards in hand. I have no guy when he plays Elder Mastery on his 2/2. At the time it may look like I’m in trouble but my hand is Resounding Thunder Jungle Weaver and Soul’s Majesty. I kill his guy in response draw my seventh land to play my 5/6 and eventually draw 5 on the next turn.

The second game looks much the same. The game seems close until I play Drumhunter and Soul’s Majesty for 5. In both cases the huge card advantage I get guarantees me an easy win.

ROUND 2: Bombs
In the first game on the play I keep an opening hand with four lands and three removal spells. When I eventually draw my first two guys two Kranioceros they are both removed by Celestial Purge. In fact he actually doesn’t do a thing making me assume he is playing five color control… until he plays his first two guys Welkin Guide and Druid of the Anima. He must be playing some Naya after all. I am a little confused by his deck and I am starting to take the advantage when he plays Flameblast Dragon. I manage to deal with the big guy playing two Resounding Thunders I had been holding for the whole game. Unfortunately that’s when he plays Godsire to which I die without having any change to deal with it.

In game two I don’t do much again but I have Nacatl in my opening hand which just happens to be enough as his deck is extremely slow. Nacatl deals him 17 damage and I finish him off with Resounding Thunder.

In the third game he plays turn 6 Obelisk of Alara. I think the game is over but he starts chumpblocking my guys for no reason. When he plays Druid of the Anima to chumblock a 3/3 instead of gaining 5 life with his artifact for instance the play is questionable. Therefore I think I have the game if he doesn’t play any of his ridiculous cards. When he draws Flameblast Dragon a couple of turns later he manages to turn the tables and take the match.

Until Friday…
