Pack 1 pick 1:

My Pick:

This pick was tough. I considered picking one of two cards: Infest and Akrasan Squire. The first one is excellent in five color strategies pretty good in Jund and fine in Esper. The second one is the second best common card (after Oblivion Ring) in an exalted deck and fine in other archetypes. I picked Infest which seems a little better.

My Pick:

Here I chose the very good Esper card over the great five-color choice (Branching Bolt).

My Pick:

The Sculptor is not great but Blue is the Number 1 Color in an artifact deck while the Squire has good chance not to make the cut.

My Pick:

Protomatter Powder is fine with Sanctum Gargoyle but I prefer a good sideboard card than a playable one that will probably not make the cut.

My Pick:

I could have picked up 4 Squire by now and all I have is a pretty weak first pick.

My Pick:

A fine second pick and a second Mage is probably wheeling.

I don’t like Marauder without any decent support.

My Pick:

As my curve is pretty low the Serpent is tempting. However the deck will probably be unstable and I will definitely need to draw my three colors. Therefore I picked the card that will be the best if I draw my mana in a timely fashion.

Pretty good when all you have is artifacts (mostly).

Even if I need my three colors and am therefore tempted by the Sphere the Alchemist and the Gargoyle seem a little better. I go for the Black card but I’m not sure about this pick.

I’ve seen this pack before… Let’s be coherent and go for the same pick.

There’s nothing I’m willing to play but several cards I don’t feel like facing. Let’s take the worst.

White should be a splash at this point and I rather like having a good sideboard card.

Decklist:

Etherium Sculptor
Tidehollow Strix
Esper Battlemage
Sanctum Gargoyle
Courier’s Capsule
Cloudheath Drake
Tidehollow Strix
Obelisk of Esper
2 Windwright Mage
Metallurgeon
Agony Warp
2 Glaze Fiend
Puppet Conjurer
Etherium Astrolabe
Steelclad Serpent
Magister Sphinx
2 Sedraxis Alchemist
Faerie Mechanist
Parasitic Strix
7 Island
7 Swamp
4 Plains

This draft didn’t go too well. The deck is definitely short as far as mana fixers are concerned. Therefore I tried to make the deck as stable as possible by playing White as a splash even though it hurt me to leave Darklit Gargoyle and Vedalken Outlander in the sideboard.

Round 1 Naya (Limited rating: 1667)
I won the first game with the Conjurer plus Astrolabe combo and the second with double Glaze Fiend. Even though I missed land drops on turns 3 and 4 I won that game on turn 7.

Round 2 Esper (1813)
Sphinx on turn 6 game 1 and double Glaze Fiend game 2.

Round 3 Jund (1692)
I took a mulligan and lost to double pinger in game 1. Seeing those cards I took out the Fiends for game 2 but I lost without playing a spell anyway hindered by a double mulligan.

Until tomorrow…

Oli
