Draft with Olivier Ruel... at StarCityGames.com!
Monday, June 1st – Hall of Famer Olivier Ruel takes us through an 8-4 draft queue on Magic Online. He shares some comprehensive thoughts about both the picks and the games, and talks us through each step of the way! If you’re looking to improve your Limited game, this is the article series for you!

Pack 1 pick 1:

My Pick:

Lots of Esper cards but none of the non-UWB card can’t be considered a first pick. Also even though the signal is not great there are great chances an Esper card wheels here.

Pack 1 pick 2:

My Pick:

Blister Beetle would make sense but Esper is usually UW based and the 1/1 is not really a card I want to splash. I’d rather have a strong card in my deck if I have to switch.

Pack 1 pick 3:

My Pick:

Close one here. Elvish Visionary could be an option but I like the Sages/Battlemage combo and I just like Blue better than Green in ACR.

Pack 1 pick 4:

My Pick:

Same as pack two. I an either have a mediocre Esper card (Resounding Wave) or a good Green card. I’d rather keep my options open.

I don’t really like the way this draft is going.

My Pick:

Good news finally. People on my right don’t seem very interested by Blue cards. But I’ll have to wait for pack 3 to be sure about that.

Pack 2 pick 3:

My Pick:

I have never played the card and I want to try it so next time I’ll know if it’s really better than Strix or Cormorants.

Pack 2 pick 4:

My Pick:

Combo with Strider and with several cards I could still get passed.

Pack 2 pick 5:

Pack 2 pick 6:

My Pick:

Less powerful but more curvy than the Alchemist. It is also better for the deck’s stability.

Pack 2 pick 8:

My Pick:

Unsummon would be pretty good but the zero-mana artifact is nice with Esperzoa and all the artifact cards (Strider Arsenal Thresher).

Back up to compensate for my lack of removal and more stability for the deck.

Right now the Hulk would be better but it may wheel and I’m intending to get some gold cards from this pack!

Not the ideal splash but it’s not like there is anything else I want here.

I actually considered running Onyx Goblet which is good in synergy with the deck but I have a very stable deck without it and that’s the most important thing to me.

Round 1: Jund

I take control of the game very quickly as Metallurgeon Sludge Strider and Unbender Tine prevent his Algae Gharial/Rockslide Elemental/Scavenge Drake trio from doing much. And when I eventually play a non-artifact guy (Aven Trailblazer) I have two Visions to couner his two removal spells.

In the second game it takes him six turns to find his Black mana while I already took a huge lead with Vedalken Outlander Esperzoa and Strider. He tries to fight back but he is not able to overcome the delays he felt in the early game and I finish him with Thopter Foundry.

Round 2: Jund

This was a typical round that I like when a deadline is approaching. I take 4 mulligans and play one spell in two games which gets killed by Blister Beetle.

This time unfortunately I still had much more time before the deadline and I had put much effort in making my deck as stable as I could. After my pretty bad Day 1 at Grand Prix: Seattle yesterday… I guess it is just not my weekend.

Until Wednesday…
