Drafting With Olivier – M10 #12

SCG 10K Philadelphia... the first major event featuring Zendikar!
Monday, September 21st – Hall of Famer Olivier Ruel takes us through an 8-4 draft queue on Magic Online. He shares some comprehensive thoughts about both the picks and the games, and talks us through each step of the way! If you’re looking to improve your Limited game, this is the article series for you!

Pack 1 pick 1:

My Pick:

1) Harm’s Way
2) Consume Spirit
In my previous draft I took Tendrils over Harm’s Way and Pacifism but here I’d rather go for the White trick for two reasons. First Pacifism is a much stronger signal than Razorfoot Griffin and also because I’ve been drafting Black a little too often lately and I’d like to change it up this time! And anyway unless I manage to play Mono Black Harm’s Way is the best card.

Pack 1 pick 2:

Pack 1 pick 3:

My Pick:

Gravedigger is the best card but with one excellent Blue and one excellent White card already Ponder which will help dig for those two cards is a pretty good pick.

Pack 1 pick 4:

My Pick:

In an aggro deck Excommunicate could be an option but these first three picks are much closer to control.

Pack 1 pick 5:

My Pick:

I like Righteousness when I have many guys and when I play against Green decks. Here it’s not fantastic and Sage Owl also helps dig for the right cards. Sage Owl and Ponder could make Expanse pretty good as well.

Pack 1 pick 6:

My Pick:

As I’ve only one White card so far Veteran Armorsmith is not very good for me. I’m unlikely to have two White mana on turn 2 to be aggressive or to get many soldiers. Cancel just seems more consistent.

Pack 1 pick 7:

My Pick:

I’m probably not playing 2 Sage Owl while Weakness should be able to deal with pretty much all my guys for only one mana.

Pack 1 pick 8:

My Pick:

Once again I’m not such a huge fan of Righteousness in this kind of deck. Alluring Siren could be good if I had more guys but once again it doesn’t apply very much here.

Pack 2 pick 1:

My Pick:

1) Serra Angel
2) Planar Cleansing
I like Planar Cleansing a little better than Serra Angel but I’m almost Mono Blue at the moment so Serra Angel will be easier to run.

Pack 2 pick 2:

My Pick:

1) Divine Verdict
2) Wind Drake
3) Indestructibility
My deck is pretty strong right now but it misses guys which means Indestructibility is not an option. I’d like to take Wind Drake but Verdict is better and I will need removal to deal with the guys I won’t be able to counter.

Pack 2 pick 3:

My Pick:

1) Merfolk Looter
2) Blinding Mage
Probably the best two commons for my deck. I like Looter a little more and anyway if I want to keep on playing spells but also keep the mana for my counters and for Divine Verdict it’s better not to pick the Mage.

Pack 2 pick 4:

My Pick:

Undead Slayer is better against about 1/8 of the decks and a two-mana 2/2 can deal some pretty good beatdown if I’ve counters as backup.

My Pick:

I received so many good cards in the last few picks that I’ve lots of playables and two-drops. A second Lion won’t make the cut.

Pack 3 pick 2:

My Pick:

I’m not playing enough Plains to make Ascension a bomb and Blinding Mage is about the worst card for me to face.

Pack 3 pick 3:

My Pick:

Amazing against me good in a deck which has many instants like mine I like Rod of Ruin here. I’d like another Cancel but the danger of my deck is that I may not be able to stop early drops like Centaur Courser. Also I could have to play counters and removal on any guy I see if I don’t even have any way to block them.

Pack 3 pick 4:

My Pick:

I don’t have enough White mana for White Knight. If I’m supposed to draw two Plains on turn 4 or 5 Siege Mastodon will almost always be better.

Pack 3 pick 5:

My Pick:

Pack 3 pick 6:

Pack 3 pick 7:

My Pick:

I think my pick is wrong here. The 2/2 is better in general but my deck may need blockers more than attackers.

I win my first round without much trouble as I can resolve an early game Looter and sit behind my counters until I play one of my bombs (Air Elemental game 1 and Mind Control in game 2).

The second round is quite interesting. I’ve control of the game when I cast Air Elemental to start racing my opponent. On the next run I’ll have Negate and Essence Scatter so I should be good if he doesn’t play anything too strong. Ant Queen? Let’s move to game 2.

In the second game I play around his rare and I have the mana to counter it when he casts it on turn 5. I then play Serra Angel while he casts… a second Ant Queen! I attack with my Angel and my Lion he has Runeclaw Bear and his 5/5 which he actually decides to block with. Good news Divine verdict kills it and we can go to game 3.

In the third game I can’t find a counter so I play Mastodon on turn five. He draws his 5 lands taps them and plays… Stampeding Rhino! Good news I’m way ahead in the game as Rod of Ruin deals with Child of Night and Kelinore Bat until he draws his Ant Queen. I dig with Looter and find Mind Control which allows me to steal his bomb. I also drew a Cancel on the same turn so when I next untap the game will be mine. He draws taps 5 of his 7 lands and casts his backup Ant Queen. Ouch.

This time I don’t draw Divine Verdict and I lose in the semis for the 147th time in a row.

Until Wednesday…
