P1P2 – Yep I just went all in on pick two. At least you guys get to see the archetype in action.
P1P4 – Obelisk is better than a random 5/5 win condition at this stage.
P1P6 – I tend to take Obelisks over Panoramas early in the draft to ensure I get enough.
P1P9 – Capsule could easily be right here and the pick is very close.

P2P2 – This pack made me laugh. I haven’t played a ton with Manaplasm yet but it’s probably better than Bolt in this deck.
P2P5 – This was really close between Obelisk Panorama and Plowbeast. I decided to take the land since I already had 4 Obelisk and it was still early enough to pick up some better win conditions and not waste a pick.

P3P1 – This pick was pretty annoying. I decided to go with the most flexible option and take the Thunder even though I’d much rather have a Bant Charm in my final deck. Whatever the case it was time to start picking up some creatures in this pack.
P3P2 – I really wanted to Necropolis here but double Carrion Thrash is just awesome.
P3P4 – Specter hasn’t been great for me in this archetype and I really wanted more fixing.

While it may look crazy this is probably the best mana I’ve had in the archetype since I don’t have crazy costs from Ultimatums or anything else. Everything in the deck is single mana except for an irrellevant Ridge Rannet.

Round 1 was against BRG. Game 1 was humorous and also bizarre. I kept a sketchy hand on the draw but nothing happened for quite a while in the game except him casting two Blightnings and me countering with Kiss of Amesha. Eventually I played out Rhox War Monk Bull Cerodon and finally Broodmate Dragon after being without Black mana for most of the game. He ran out of removal and didn’t really do much in this game. Game 2 I Agony Warped his Rockslide Elemental and he again had double Blightning. The second Blightning screwed me since I had to discard my sixth land and couldn’t play Broodmate right away. Eventually I drew the land to get the Dragon online and things looked to be in the bag. I hit him all the way down to four life until he topdecked Violent Ultimatum. I assumed I was still fine in this situation as I had been looting away lands with Grixis Battlemage. Somehow I went on to draw 12 straight mana sources and not a single relevant spell and died to a couple of random dorks with all spells left in my deck. Game 3 I mulled on the play and started with a couple Obelisks and Rhox War Monk. I Kissed up and he wasn’t doing a ton so I checked out his grip with Sculler. Luckily it was a turn before he Archdemon would come out and he didn’t have any Green mana for the Violent Ultimatum stranded in his hand. From here Rhox War Monk kept bashing until it was joined by the Dragon to finish him off.

If this match alone isn’t proof of the strength of this archetype then I don’t know what is. Blightning is by far the best common against the archetype and my opponent cast two in both games 1 and 2 and I still won the match (and got very unlucky to lose game 2 in my opinion).

Round 2 I played against some four-color creation. Game 1 he started with Topan Ascetic and then instantly tried Lightning Talons on turn 4. Unfortunately for him I had Resounding Silence ready. On turn 6 he went for Predator Dragon and again I had Resounding Silence ready for him. The game dragged on for a bit with him somehow also casting Empyrial Archangel which I killed by cycling Thunder on his face and attacking. Eventually he succumbed to a Carrion Thrash with Broodmate Dragon waiting in the graveyard. Game 2 he played the Archangel early on and I had no real way to answer it. Game 3 I kept three lands two Obelisk (all five colors of mana) Spell Snip (sided in for the Angel/Predator Dragon) Carrion Thrash on the play. I was super happy with this hand but drew nothing but mana the rest of the game and lost. Maybe this deck only needed 4 Obelisks?

I was happy with how the draft went and felt I could’ve easily won it with some better draws in round 2 against the four-color guy.

Until tomorrow…

Nick
