I hopped in the queue for this draft when 4 players were in it. I had to run outside to my car to grab some things and by the time I’d returned we were already on pick 1. I scanned the pack really fast and then saw I only had two seconds left and took the Power of Fire first pick. Dangerously close to goof grabbing there which would’ve been unfortunate since there was also a Reflecting Pool in the pack.

The draft itself went pretty well. The Gouger over Puncture Bolt was because I was near certain I was going to go mono Red and I’d rather have the 4/4 there. I figured it was too late to get any Scuttlemutts or Farhaven Elves which would want me to run Green to ramp to my Dragon and Deus. Deckbuilding came down to cutting the Lurebound Scarecrow since I had a ton of awesome three-drops already. I added in some extra twos and cut the land down to 16.

Round 1 I played against some bizarre four-color creation. Game 1 I played a bunch of guys and literally the only spells he cast were two Safewright Quests and an Aethertow. Game 2 he played out Cursecatcher somehow (from his four-color deck). I played Initiate and then turn 2 Stream Hopper plus Clout. He didn’t really do anything relevant for the rest of the game and I killed him again with men.

Round 2 I played against GW. Game 1 I steamrolled him early and then he stabilized with Rhys the Redeemed at 4 life. Just when he was about to turn the tide I drew Hatchet Bully and finished him. Game 2 I mulled to five and put up an enormous fight culminating in Knollspine Dragon drawing three cards. Unfortunately I got flooded and couldn’t stop his Rendclaw Trow with Shield of the Oversoul on it. Game 3 I got the god draw: Turn 2 Butcher turn 3 Tattermunge Duo turn 4 Hobgoblin sped up by Crimson Wisps dealing 9. I attacked him once more after that and Flame Javelined his face.

Round 3 was against B/u. Game 1 I crushed him quickly with Gouger and Hobgoblin as well as a Clouted up (for Haste) Duo. Game 2 was super close but he ended up ripping Unmake to kill my Noggle Bandit when he was at 5. I drew some lands after that and we were off to the final game. Game 3 was a heartbreaker as my opening hand was excellent but only had two lands. I got stuck on three and while I somehow still got him to 4 life this game I was never able to finish the job in the face of Soul Snuffers Kulrath Knight and Unmake. Quite an annoying finish after drafting such a great deck.

Until tomorrow…

Nick
