p1p3 I honestly had no idea what to take here. So many options and each had merit. I went with the Witch as I was hoping for mono Black after my first pick and could easily splash a few Islands.

p1p11 Initiate over Sootwalkers… I already have some four-drops and I like drafting a low curve Black deck that abuses Initiate.

p2p1 This pack was the worst and while I don’t even like Kindler in this deck it’s much better than Axeshark and I wasn’t hating Prison Term or anything.

p2p4 Power of Fire and Curse are very close here because I have Manaforge Cinders.

p2p5 Man I wish I was White.

p3p2 I’ve never played with Doomgape before and I thought Creakwood Ghoul would probably table more often.

The late Razorfin Abolisher was awesome for this deck.

I went with 18 land in this deck since I had some really strong top end stuff and also Oona’s Grace to prevent flooding.

Round 1 I played against WGr. Game 1 I blew him out with River’s Grasp on his first play which was Rune-Cervin Rider. I took Unmake with it and then played Wretch and Midnight Banshee knowing the coast was clear. Eventually I killed his side with Soul Snuffers but this allowed him to topdeck Flame Javelin for my Banshee. I played Stalker Hag and some other guys and he couldn’t really come back from it. Game 2 I played out two Butchers which were met with Recumbent Bliss and Curse of Chains. Game 3 I crushed him again with River’s Grasp and Banshee for the most part.

Round 2 was against mono Red. Game 1 I play an early Soul Snuffers to destroy his offense. After that he emptied his hand and my Divinity of Pride traded up with Cragginwick Cremator. He was out of gas and I Beseeched up Midnight Banshee and finished the job with a hasty Doomgape via Sootstoke Kindler. Game 2 he kept a one-lander on the play and missed after playing Duergar Assailant. He ended up ripping three lands straight after this and had a pretty aggressive draw. I had Cultbrand Cinder and some small blockers like Gatewarden and then tutored up Divinity at 8 life. He had no answer to Divinity and Soul Snuffers ruined any plans of counter attacking.

Round 3 my opponent was some combination of GWR. Game 1 he Firespouted my two guys and I was still in great shape as I’d Beseeched up Midnight Banshee. Then he had Tower Above and I was dead. Game 2 my draw started off great with Inkfathom Witch turn 2 Stalker Hag turn 3 while he played a Safehold Sentry. Turn 4 I River’s Grasped the Sentry which was poised to untap and block my Hag and took away his Firespout. None of this ended up mattering as I drew 7 straight lands and no more spells after my opening hand. My opponent in the finals was also a total jerk and trash-talked for no reason.

Until Monday…

Nick
