p3p1 This pick was annoying because I really wanted to take Quillspike.

I would’ve loved to take Flourishing Defenses over Redcap and just stay in mono Green but I couldn’t bring myself to do it.

Deckbuilding was interesting and I decided to cut Ember Gale and Flame Jab in order to cut down the spell count and also favor Talara’s Batallion. This made the deck closer to mono Green.

Round 1 I’m paired against mono Black. Game 1 he played tons of removal including double Gloomlance and double Soul Reap. I still had control of the game and him at 4 life when I started to draw all lands at a crucial point and he kept drawing good spells. This was one of those games where I was sure he was dead and he somehow came back. Game 2 he stalled on three lands and I crushed him with Cultbrand Cinder and Wickerbough Elder. Game 3 was all about Grim Poppet. He was crushing me with Loch Korrigan Fang Skulkin and Nightsky Mimic but all of those problems disappeared thanks to Devoted Druid. Winning from there was academic.

Round 2 my opponent was BR. Game 1 he didn’t do much but play Noxious Hatchling Ashenmoor Gouger and Knollspine Invocation (which never activated). I beat him down with some dudes and finished him off with Burn Trail. Game 2 he played Gouger again but I stalled it with Aerie Ouphes blocking and killing his Oona’s Gatewarden. He put Elemental Mastery on his Gouger which proved to be annoying for a while. After this I built up a bunch of guys and wrecked the Mastery on a key turn with Snakeform while attacking for the win.

My finals opponent was UB. Game 1 I get stuck on four lands and lose to three fliers with Double Aerie Ouphes in hand. Depressing. Game 2 was even more annoying as I got Raking Canopy out and got him to one life. On the previous turn he had gotten through damage by attacking with Thistledown Duo and Consigning to Dream before blockers to give it flying. Oddly enough he had double Consign and I died in another spot I was almost certain I had locked up. The draft went well overall and I was happy with my picks.

Until tomorrow…

Nick
