Drafting With LSV – Shards of Alara #14

Draft with Luis Scott-Vargas every day... At StaCityGames.com!
Thursday, January 8th – Canadian maestro Rich Hoaen has downed tools for good, as work and real life intrudes apace. As a replacement, we have Luis Scott-Vargas, who shares each pick from a Magic Online 8-4 queue. He talks us through the difficult decisions in the forums… do you agree with his choices?

P1p1 I swear I don’t select these drafts I just put up each draft I do. That being said here is yet another Tower Gargoyle over Magma Spray this time.
P2 Picks 2-5: This is the worst set of packs I have run into a good while and it feels like this deck could have been a lot better if not for this string of picks.
P2p6 Dragger seems a little better than Capsule given that I have a Corpse Connoisseur.
P3p2 I like drawing cards and Kiss is just about the best at that. Crumbling Necropolis is close but Kiss seems like the pick here.

Round 1 versus Naya
G1 I Sculler his Naya Charm leaving a hand of Skeletonize and Rakeclaw Gargantuan. I soon assemble Astrolabe Puppet Conjurer and Esper Battlemage to attrition him to death fairly quickly.
G2 I Sculler him on turn 2 and he doesn’t have a third land. I Sculler again but since he never draws his third land it doesn’t really matter. Random guys beat him down while he isn’t able to cast anything.

Round 2 versus Five-Color Obelisk
G1 It feels like he is slowrolling something and there was a Caldera Hellion in the draft. I don’t play much but the Hellion fueled by Dregscape Zombie is still pretty strong. He follows up with Sedraxis Specter and Feral Hydra which I am able to deal with with a pair of Oblivion Rings. Still a 5/5 Skullmulcher finishes me without much further resistance.
G2 I soon see why he is five color as he Sharuums back a Dispeller’s Capsule to neatly deal with both my O-Rings. I thought my deck was okay but dealing with Sharuum plus Caldera Hellion is quite beyond its capabilities.

Until tomorrow…
