Drafting with Kenji – Scars of Mirrodin #6!

Friday, December 17th – Kenji Tsumura, one of the most feared draft opponents to ride the Pro Tour, is here to give you the rundown on Scars draft. Follow his picks one at a time and watch the master in his draft report.

  Pack 1 pick 1:

  My Pick:

Which do you like Arrest or Myrsmith? I know Arrest is awesome but it’s just a removal spell
nothing more. So I took the Myrsmith which can help me towards a very fun and very explosive deck.

I used to think that Arrest was one of the best cards in the set – but more experience has
taught me that it’s not as good as I once thought it was. Maybe I’m undervaluing it now?

  Pack 1 pick 2:

  My Pick:

I don’t like Riddlesmith as much everyone else does. Heavy Arbalest is a nice card especially when
you get it early enough to draft a deck around it. (Come on Solitons!)

  Pack 1 pick 3:

  My Pick:

This is an unexciting pack. It’s too early to take Soliton (I can get Solitons later) so I took
the best creature in the pack.

  Pack 1 pick 4:

  My Pick:

Riddlesmith is the clearly best choice here.

  Pack 1 pick 5:

  My Pick:

Vedalken Certarch is good in a metalcraft deck but I like Abuna Acolyte more than Vedalken
Certarch when I still don’t know exactly what kind of a deck I’m going to end up with.

I
think that Abuna Acolyte is a very underrated card and it goes very nicely with Heavy Arbalest as
it will allow me to protect my creatures when I try to equip them.

  Pack 1 pick 6:

  My Pick:

Thrummingbird can help me make a really fun deck. At this point I was aiming to take any Trigons or
Tumble Magnets that I saw.

  Pack 1 pick 7:

  My Pick:

Trigon of Infestation combos nicely with Heavy Arbalest and with Thrummingbird.

  Pack 2 pick 1:

  My Pick:

There was nothing to take other than Revoke Existence.

  Pack 2 pick 2:

  My Pick:

Another Thrummingbird would definitely have been good for my deck but I have never used this
equipment before so I felt like I needed to try it.

  Pack 2 pick 3:

  My Pick:

My deck is kind of mana-hungry because I have a lot of thing to do like Trigon of Infestation and
Heavy Arbalest so it was nice to pick up a Palladium Myr in an otherwise weak pack.

  Pack 2 pick 4:

  My Pick:

Great! Fourth-pick Trigon of Corruption is awesome. I like Arrest a lot but Trigon is a crazy card
for my deck. And I definitely don’t want any of my opponents to play this card.

  Pack 2 pick 5:

  My Pick:

Wall of Tanglecord is also a good card but I felt like I needed the 3/3 flier.

  Pack 2 pick 6:

  My Pick:

  Pack 2 pick 7:

  My Pick:

I’ve never used this card before. I know it’s not good if my opponent knows it’s coming. But I
figured it was worth trying anyway.

  Pack 2 pick 8:

  My Pick:

The third Trigon is exciting. I should’ve taken the second Thrummingbird instead of the Nim
Deathmantle.

  Pack 2 pick 9:

  My Pick:

  Pack 2 pick 10:

  My Pick:

I almost took the Kemba’s Skyguard but enough people know that Soliton is a good that I didn’t
feel confident that I would get one in pack 3 so I took it.

  My Pick:

A second Trigon of Corruption is good news. I don’t feel (too) bad passing Hoard-Smelter Dragon.

  Pack 3 pick 2:

  My Pick:

I like Glint Hawk Idol too. However I want more artifact removal spells like Revoke Existence and
I don’t want someone to destroy my great artifacts.

  Pack 3 pick 3:

  My Pick:

I have a ton of four-mana spells. I need more mana Myrs.

  Pack 3 pick 4:

  My Pick:

What a great gift! Exactly the card I wanted.

  Pack 3 pick 5:

  My Pick:

I don’t like anything else in this pack. But at least it is a nice hate-draft from the poison
player and it combos nicely with my Thrummingbirds.

  Pack 3 pick 6:

  My Pick:

It’s as nice of a two-drop as a mana Myr. In addition I don’t need anymore four-mana drops.

  Pack 3 pick 7:

  My Pick:

My deck must be nice.

I made some mistakes while constructing this deck. After my matches I decided that I didn’t like the Riddlesmith at all. I should’ve run Abuna Acolyte instead of the Smith.

However I liked this deck way too much. This deck is just so much fun!

Round 1 R/B

I had to mulligan to six on the draw but I got good draws. I started on turn 1 Flight Spellbomb and turn 2 Wall of Tanglecord while my opponent played Nihil Spellbomb and Mimic Vat. I exiled his Mimic Vat with my Revoke Existence but I was stuck on two lands.

Fortunately he didn’t have a threat and just played Strider Harness and Ferrovore so I had enough time to draw land and start casting spells.

After a few turns of inactivity my opponent suddenly played a Flameborn Hellion. I wanted to trade my Rusted Relic for it but his Strider Harness and Instill Infection prevented that trade.

I tried stopping Hellion with my Wall and Trigon of Corruption… but his second Instill Infection crushed that plan.

At this point the cards in my hand were very good but I was stuck on four lands and my hope of Myrsmithing my way to victory was killed by his Fume Spitter. Once that happened I was in quite a bit of trouble. My board was four lands Palladium Myr and Trigon of Corruption with two counters while my opponent’s board was seven lands Ferrovore Hellion with Strider Harness (which had a -1/-1 counter thanks to my Trigon of Corruption). His attack knocked me down then he added a second Fume Spitter and Painsmith to his board.

The cards in my hands were Trigon of Infestation Heavy Arbalest Trigon of Thought Nim Deathmantle and Dispense Justice. What do you play next?

I just played Nim Deathmantle and passed the turn.

Of course he attacked with everything. I blocked his Fume Spitter with my Palladium Myr. If he didn’t use Fume Spitter‘s ability I would die.

He then played Darksteel Sentinel during his attack which allowed him to use Painsmith’s ability.

He used Smith’s ability to target Ferrovore. I would take eleven damage if he passed priority. I could play Dispense Justice but it wouldn’t be enough for me to survive because he could just sacrifice Fume Spitter. But he used Fume Spitter‘s ability on my Palladium Myr before damage so my Justice got two of his attackers.

At that point he was left with only Hellion Sentinel and Harness with no cards in his hand. So I played Trigon of Infestation and passed the next turn. My double Trigons worked well for me and I soon drew a Thrummingbird. The Bird sealed the game for me soon after thanks to my three Trigons.

Game 2

He started this game with turn 1 Spikeshot Elder and followed it up with Fume Spitter the following turn. I played Gold Myr which was killed by his Spitter and then he played Vulshok Heartstoker and Darksteel Axe over the next two turns. I was stuck on two lands again so if he had a second Mountain I wouldn’t be able to compete. But fortunately he only had four Swamps and a Mountain for lands.

I played Wall of Tanglecord and got rid of his Axe with Revoke Existence. He added Ferrovore and Necropede to his board while I played Palladium Myr which allowed me to cast everything in my hand.

I could cast two spells every turn thanks to my Palladium Myr. He played Instill Infection Turn to Slag and Sylvok Lifestaff. But those couldn’t beat my Wall of Tanglecord Loxodon Wayfarer Trigon of Infestation and Trigon of Corruption. In addition Trigon of Thought gave me more and more cards and soon the game was over.

Round 2 W/U/r

We both started with Myrsmith on turn 2. I added two Walls of Tanglecord and a Trigon of Corruption while he played two Neurok Invisimancers and Glint Hawk Idol.

His aggressive creatures combined with a Tumble Magnet knocked me down to three. But I was finally able to kill all of his creatures expect Glint Hawk Idol with my Heavy Arbalest and my Trigon of Corruption.

I had seven creatures and Heavy Arbalest so I thought that I’d win the game in two or three turns. Unfortunately he played Grand Architect before his combat. I couldn’t kill his now 3/3 Glint Hawk Idol and I didn’t have any fliers on my board so I died to his attack.

Game 2

I played Flight Spellbomb Nim Deathmantle and Trigon of Corruption in my first four turns while he played Myrsmith Iron Myr and Myr Galvanizer. I killed Myrsmith and Galvanizer with Trigon and Revoke Existence. But he added a Neurok Invisimancer and Glint Hawk Idol on his next turn. I played Vedalken Certarch and Abuna Acolyte on my own turn and spent the rest of my mana to use my Trigon of Corruption. Unfortunately he played a Mountain and Arc Trail to kill all of my creatures. I could do nothing else and the game was soon over.

I like this deck so much; I look forward to drafting it again. Unfortunately I made some mistakes during deckbuilding that I greatly regret.

See you next week!
