Draft Digest: Fun, Cubed

Ryan Saxe returns with more rapid-fire Pack 1, Pick 1 decisions in the latest installment of the Draft Digest!

Another day to fill with beautiful Cube brokenness. I won’t keep you waiting. Let’s dive in!

Pack 1, Pick 1

The Pack:

The Pick:

If you’ve never drafted Cube, you’ll probably see this Black Lotus and just take it, as it’s known to be the most busted card of all time. But in the Cube environment, Sol Ring often provides more mana and is considered to be the best card in the Cube. So yay, you learned something today! I’m taking Sol Ring.

The Pick:

Opposition is a messed-up Magic card, but I rarely have creatures in my Vintage Cube decks. And when I do, they’re cards like Emrakul, the Aeons Torn and Blightsteel Colossus. And you know what’s good with those cards? Nahiri, the Harbinger! So that’s what I’m going to pick up here.

The Pick:

I think Remand is a criminally underrated card in the Vintage Cube. Yes, Dack Fayden is one of the best cards in the Cube, and both Mox Diamond and Lightning Bolt are great ways to start off, but Remand is just too good to ignore.

When everybody is trying to do broken things, an interactive card that also digs you towards your own combo is nothing to scoff at. Sometimes Remand just feels like Time Walk when you cast it, and it’s almost never terrible, as you can find a reasonable window. So I’m going to happily pick up Remand here.

The Pick:

I know you recently heard how much I love the card Regrowth, but don’t worry; I’m not going to take it here. Blue Signets and blue fetchlands are hard to pass up, so that’s what’s in contention for me. In my power rankings of color combinations, U/B is much better than U/G. Additionally, black is a very common splash for cards like Mind Twist, so I’m going to take the Dimir Signet here.

The Pick:

Wow, there are some pretty great options here. To be honest, this one comes down to preference mostly. The “correct pick,” as in the pick that probably yields the highest win-rate, is Sulfuric Vortex, but I’m not currently in the mood to play mono-red. As is, all the other options are great, but I have a soft spot for combo decks and you can never have enough tutors. So I’m going to start with Vampiric Tutor.
