Hello everyone, and welcome back to my daily series of financial articles about Theros! The last two Gods were spoiled/confirmed, the third planeswalker of the set is out there in the open, and we’ve got a nifty new rare to go over to boot!
How I review:
Starting Price: The first price we assign to this card as a preorder.
Current Price: The current price of the card by the time this article goes live.
Future Price—Short Term: The price I believe this card will be at before Magic Online redemptions go live for Theros.
Future Price—Medium Term: The price I believe this card will be at by the time the next set (Born of the Gods) comes out.
Future Price—Long Term: The price I believe this card will be at a year from now when the next fall set is released (name unknown).
Starting Price: $25 Current Price: $25 Future Price (Short Term): $15 Future Price (Medium Term): $20 Future Price (Long Term): $10 |
I happen to love Ashiok—it essentially comes into play with five loyalty for only three mana, which makes it hard to remove. The issue is that the first ability doesn’t really do anything in and of itself (there isn’t a dedicated winning mill strategy) and the second ability is hit or miss. I think this is a planeswalker that will drop in value against the hype. I do hope I’m wrong on this one, though, because it could end up being one of the sleeper cards of the set. (Despite starting at $25, everyone is expecting it to go down.)

Wizards of the Coast really wants Mono-Black Control to work, so Erebos is pushed pretty hard. A lot of people are going nuts over this card, but it’s essentially Greed + Forsaken Wastes that eventually might become a creature. Neither of these is a really “bad” ability, but neither is particularly good either. I think this card will remain popular because I believe the Gods are going to follow the Eldrazi cycle of popularity—but I also think that people saw “draw a card” and went hyper over Erebos without looking to closely at the cost.

Unlike Erebos, both of Thassa’s abilities are going to be relevant each turn. My friend Eric Lewandowski (of Netdraft fame) put Thassa thusly: “We’ve come a long way from Think Tank.”
Of course, Thassa is an indestructible Think Tank that can become a 5/5 creature and makes creatures unblockable at a repeatable low cost (1U). Thassa will surely see play and may see play in older formats (think Merfolk) where she can turn on as a creature more easily thanks to Merfolk lords.

Tymaret would have been a five-star card if it could sacrifice itself to deal two damage. This would have made Tymaret into a recurring Ember Hauler. However, since Tymaret can’t sacrifice itself, we’ll have to look at its other values:
1) It’s a 2/2 for two.
2) It’s a Zombie.
3) It can recur.
4) It can throw other creatures for a Shock.
These are all good abilities, but Rakdos isn’t dying for a two-drop creature right now and many of the Zombies that would make a good tribal deck are rotating with Innistrad block. Because of this, right now I see a limited potential for Tymaret, though not enough to think it’ll drop to bulk price (it still curves correctly).
Cards With New Values
Stormbreath Dragon: From $15 to $25 in one day. The hype machine around Stormbreath Dragon is high, so I would trade these off at your Prerelease/right at release while they are at their height.
Thank you all for reading, and I’ll see you all tomorrow for the last article of this week!
