Daily Financial Value Of Khans Of Tarkir–September 9th!

Ben Bleiweiss has the financial lowdown on all the latest spoilers for the upcoming Khans of Tarkir!

We’re reaching the end of the Financial Value of Khans of Tarkir! Almost all of the remaining mythics in the set were spoiled in the past 24 hours, along with a couple more rares. Since there are a few cards to discuss today, let’s not delay!

How I review:

Starting Price: The first price we assign to the card as a preorder.
Current Price: The current price of the card by the time this article goes live.
Future Price (Short Term): The price I believe the card will be at before Magic Online redemptions go live for Magic 2015.
Future Price (Medium Term): The price I believe this card will be at by the time the next set (Fate Reforged).
Future Price (Long Term): The price I believe the card will be at a year from now, when M16 is released.

Ashcloud Phoenix

Rarity: Mythic

Starting Price: $4

Current Price: $3

Future Price (Short Term): $3

Future Price (Medium Term): $2

Future Price (Long Term): $2

As good as Phoenix cards look on the surface, so far they have ended up being bulk. I see Ashcloud Phoenix as being no different and am very pessimistic about its long-term value.

Deflecting Palm

Rarity: Rare

Starting Price: $0.50

Current Price: $0.50

Future Price (Short Term): $1

Future Price (Medium Term): $0.75

Future Price (Long Term): $0.75

Very niche card that reminds me of Eye for an Eye (except, of course, it prevents damage). Eye for and Eye was not really playable back in the day, but will Deflecting Palm be? My guess that it will be a regularly-played sideboard card but probably won’t make the maindeck of most decks. Aggressive Boros decks want to be proactive about dealing damage, and midrange Boros decks want to be able to kill creatures, not prevent damage.

Hooded Hydra

Rarity: Mythic

Starting Price: $3

Current Price: $3

Future Price (Short Term): $3

Future Price (Medium Term): $3

Future Price (Long Term): $3

This is the first spoiled morph creature that is both potentially playable, and where the morph cost gives a discount over just hardcasting the creature. Though you still have to put eight mana into Hooded Hydra to turn it face up, it’s a payment over two turns. It’s a lot easier to go from three to five mana than it is to hardcast this as a 5/5 at seven mana.

So is Hooded Hydra any good? It doesn’t have evasion, it’s smaller than the curve unless you morph it, and Chasm Skulker does a better job of putting 1/1 creatures into play when it dies. So long story short – I think that Hooded Hydra will be a popular casual card (as most Hydras seem to be these days), but it’s probably just a little too small to see serious play in Standard.

Pearl Lake Ancient

Rarity: Mythic

Starting Price: $2

Current Price: $2

Future Price (Short Term): $1.50

Future Price (Medium Term): $1.50

Future Price (Long Term): $1.50

This is the very definition of a bulk mythic rare.

Siege Rhino

Rarity: Rare

Starting Price: $4

Current Price: $4

Future Price (Short Term): $10

Future Price (Medium Term): $6

Future Price (Long Term): $6

I’m going to assume this is in the same cycle of creatures as Savage Knuckleblade and Mantis Rider. The two previously-spoiled creatures were both very Standard playable. Siege Rhino is likely the best of these three. It’s huge, it tramples, and it immediately impacts the game when it hits the board (drain for three). This is going to be a tournament staple in Standard and may make its way into Modern (cause wow, does this combo well with Restoration Angel).

Changes since last article:

Jeering Instigator: From $0.75 to $0.99 – People keep buying these 40 at a time, so that tells me the price is too low.

Pack Value!

To determine the value of a booster pack, I’m going to start with the following formula:

(2R + 1M)/121

That isn’t enough of a picture though. In fairness, $0.50 to $1 bulk rares don’t really amount to “real” value if you’re looking to trade with other
players. So I’m omitting the value of any rare that is below $2 (rounded from $1.99) and any mythic that is below $4 (rounded from $3.99).

41 out of the 53 rares have been spoiled. Here are the ones that are $2 and up!

Bloodstained Mire: $20

End Hostilities: $3

Flooded Strand: $25

Ghostfire Blade: $2

Mantis Rider: $3

Mardu Ascendancy: $2

Mindswipe: $2

Polluted Delta: $30

Rakshasa Deathdealer: $2

Rattleclaw Mystic: $5

Savage Knuckleblade: $4

Siege Rhino: $4

Utter End: $6

Windswept Heath: $20

Wooded Foothills: $20

Total Rare Value: $148

14 out of the 15 mythic rares have been spoiled!

Anafenza, the Foremost: $8

Clever Impersonator: $15

Empty the Pits: $5

Narset, Enlightened Master: $6

Sarkhan, the Dragonspeaker: $25

See the Unwritten: $5

Sidisi, Brood Tyrant: $4

Sorin, Solemn Visitor: $15

Wingmate Roc: $6

Total Mythic Value: $89

So plugging this into the formula, we get the following

(2R ($148) + 1M ($89) = $385

$385/121 = $3.18 value per pack, or $114.48 per box.

See you all tomorrow to discuss some of the last few unspoiled rares/mythics in the set!
