Daily Financial Value Of Khans Of Tarkir–September 4th!

Ben continues his look at Khans of Tarkir spoilers so that you can know which will be good buys and which will be busts!

Hello everyone and welcome back to the Financial Value of Khans of Tarkir! There aren’t many new cards to discuss since yesterday, so this will be a shorter update than the past two days. Also included below is a review of which cards have changed price since the last article!

How I review:

Starting Price: The first price we assign to the card as a preorder.
Current Price: The current price of the card by the time this article goes live.
Future Price (Short Term): The price I believe the card will be at before Magic Online redemptions go live for Magic 2015.
Future Price (Medium Term): The price I believe the card will be at by the time the next set (Khans of Tarkir) comes out.
Future Price (Long Term): The price I believe the card will be at a year from now, when M16 is released.

Flying Crane Technique

Rarity: Rare

Starting Price: $0.50

Current Price: $0.50

Future Price (Short Term): $0.50

Future Price (Medium Term): $0.50

Future Price (Long Term): $0.50

The flavor on this card is amazing. This card is one of the most powerful Limited wrecking balls I’ve seen in quite a while. None of this translates to being playable in any Constructed format, so this is a bulk Rare. Foils may be popular with Commander/Casual players because of the flavor involved, so keep an eye on foil prices rising (slightly) above bulk.

Kheru Spellthief

Rarity: Rare

Starting Price: $1

Current Price: $1

Future Price (Short Term): $0.50

Future Price (Medium Term): $0.75

Future Price (Long Term): $0.75

Reminds me of Draining Whelk, which stayed in the $0.50-$0.75 range until Time Spiral wasn’t in print any longer. Might be fringe Constructed playable but more likely will be a casual staple for years to come.

Rakshasa Vizier

Rarity: Rare

Starting Price: $1

Current Price: $1

Future Price (Short Term): $0.50

Future Price (Medium Term): $0.50

Future Price (Long Term): $0.50

The ability on Rakshasa Vizier is one that hasn’t been done before (making a creature grow by exiling cards from your graveyard), as other cards done in
this fashion tend to target specific cards (such as Scavenging Ooze). The potential for Rakshasa Vizier to get large is there, but as a five mana 4/4
creature with no evasion abilities, I don’t see Rakshasa Vizier as being Constructed playable. Should find a home in Commander, though the restriction of
only growing from cards removed from your graveyard is a little restricting (versus using Tormod’s Crypt on an opponent’s graveyard, and getting double
duty out of growing Rakshasa Vizier and nuking your opponent). I just don’t think delve is going to be enough to make this worth playing.

Changes since the last article:

Duneblast: From $0.75 to $0.50 – Lowest preorder price for a Rare. Just not selling well at all, even after I dropped it from $1 to $0.75.

Ivorytusk Fortress: From $1 to $0.50 – Going to be one of the Intro Pack Rares, so this will be largely of bulk value for a while.

Polluted Delta: From $25 to $30 – and we are about to sell out of all of our preorders on this card, less than a week into spoiler season!

Sagu Mauler: From $1 to $1.25 – It’s a 6/6 trampling Hexproof creature for six mana, even without the morph ability. This might be playable as a finisher
in the new Standard – if so, look for the price to go up!

Sidisi, Brood Tyrant: From $6 to $4 – E-bay has dropped to $16ish for playsets of this card on preorder, so I’m following the market on Sidisi.

Wingmate Roc: From $5 to $8 – A lot of people want to try this card out, even though I can’t personally recommend it.

Zurgo Helmsmasher: From $5 to $4 – I still think Zurgo is a fine card for Standard, but being in a Duel Deck will hurt his value in the short term.

PACK VALUE

To determine the value of a booster pack, I’m going to start with the following formula:

(2R + 1M)/121

That isn’t enough of a picture though. In fairness, $0.50 to $1 bulk rares don’t really amount to “real” value if you’re looking to trade with other
players. So I’m omitting the value of any Rare that is below $2 (rounded from $1.99) and any Mythic that is below $4 (rounded from $3.99).

25 out of the 53 Rares have been spoiled. Here are the ones that are $2 and up!

Bloodstained Mire: $20

End Hostilities: $3

Flooded Strand: $25

Ghostfire Blade: $2

Mardu Ascendancy: $2

Polluted Delta: $30

Rattleclaw Mystic: $5

Utter End: $6

Windswept Heath: $20

Wooded Foothills: $20

Total Rare Value: $133

9 out of the 15 Mythic Rares have been spoiled!

Anafenza, the Foremost: $8

Narset, Enlightened Master: $6

Sarkhan, the Dragonspeaker: $25

See the Unwritten: $5

Sidisi, Brood Tyrant: $4

Sorin, Solemn Visitor: $15

Ugin’s Nexus: $4

Wingmate Roc: $6

Zurgo Helmsmasher: $4

Total Mythic Value: $76

So plugging this into the formula, we get the following:

(2R ($133) + 1M ($76) = $342

$342/121 = $2.83 value per pack, or $101.88 per box.

Average box value dropped slightly today because of some of the Mythics slipping in value, combined with mostly bulk rares being spoiled. I still have a
lot of high hopes for the set, since there are six Mythics and a majority of Rares still left to be spoiled!

See you all tomorrow!
