Daily Financial Value Of Khans Of Tarkir–September 11th!

Ben Bleiweiss wraps up another great week of Khans of Tarkir spoilers by giving you the set’s latest pricing trends!

It’s the next-to-last day of my Khans of Tarkir Financial Values articles! The majority of the set has been spoiled (though most of the Commons/Uncommons were spoiled unofficially, and without their rarities clarified). In today’s article, I’ll talk about the last couple of rares that were revealed in the past 24 hours. In tomorrow’ article, I’ll talk about the commons/uncommons of note in this set, the foils you should keep an eye out for, and give my final thoughts about this set!

How I review:

Starting Price: The first price we assign to the card as a preorder.
Current Price: The current price of the card by the time this article goes live.
Future Price (Short Term): The price I believe the card will be at before Magic Online redemptions go live for Magic 2015.
Future Price (Medium Term): The price I believe this card will be at by the time the next set (Fate Reforged).
Future Price (Long Term): The price I believe the card will be at a year from now, when the next fall block is released.

Grim Haruspex

Rarity: Rare

Starting Price: $1

Current Price: $1

Future Price (Short Term): $0.75

Future Price (Medium Term): $0.50

Future Price (Long Term): $0.50

In case you missed it:

2B. Creature–Human Warrior. Whenever another nontoken creature you control dies, draw a card. 3/2

If Grim Haruspex drew a card from dying, I’d be all over this card. Since it only triggers from other creatures dying (and only your creatures, and only non-token creatures), I think this card just won’t make the grade in Constructed. Should be a fine card for Commander play, but that’s not what floats card value.

High Sentinels of Arashin

Rarity: Rare

Starting Price: $0.50

Current Price: $0.50

Future Price (Short Term): $0.50

Future Price (Medium Term): $0.50

Future Price (Long Term): $0.50

In case you missed it:

3W. Creature–Bird Soldier. Flying. ~gets +1/+1 for each other creature you control with a +1/+1 counter on it. 3W: Put a +1/+1 counter on target creature. 3/4

Bulk Rare. Looks like it’ll be a really fun Commander card, but four mana to give a +1/+1 counter (and grow itself by +1/+1) is a lot of mana to pay for Constructed. Limited all-star.

Retribution of the Ancients

Rarity: Rare

Starting Price: $0.50

Current Price: $0.50

Future Price (Short Term): $0.50

Future Price (Medium Term): $0.50

Future Price (Long Term): $0.50

In case you missed it:

B. Enchantment. Remove X +1/+1 counters from among creatures you control: target creature gets –X/-X until end of turn.

While this will be a great card for outlast decks in Limited events, I see this as a sideboard card in a specific environment where there are a lot of X/1 creatures running around. Otherwise, shouldn’t see much Constructed play.

Trap Essence

Rarity: Rare

Starting Price: $0.50

Current Price: $0.50

Future Price (Short Term): $0.50

Future Price (Medium Term): $0.50

Future Price (Long Term): $0.50

In case you missed it:

RUG. Instant. Counter target creature spell. Put two +1/+1 counters on up to one target creature.

Three mana (three-color) creature-only counter with a minimal upside effect (gives a creature you control +2/+2?) No thanks. Too many hoops to jump through for too little of an effect.

Changes Since Yesterday:

Bloodsoaked Hero: From $2 to $5. Looking to be the breakout card from the set!

Savage Knuckleblade: From $4 to $5. High demand, will likely sell out before the prerelease next week.

Pack Value!

To determine the value of a booster pack, I’m going to start with the following formula:

(2R + 1M)/121

That isn’t enough of a picture though. In fairness, $0.50 to $1 bulk rares don’t really amount to “real” value if you’re looking to trade with other
players. So I’m omitting the value of any Rare that is below $2 (rounded from $1.99) and any Mythic that is below $4 (rounded from $3.99).

51 out of the 53 Rares have been spoiled. Here are the ones that are $2 and up!

Bloodsoaked Hero: $5

Bloodstained Mire: $20

Butcher of the Horde: $5

End Hostilities: $3

Flooded Strand: $25

Ghostfire Blade: $2

Mantis Rider: $3

Mardu Ascendancy: $2

Mindswipe: $2

Polluted Delta: $30

Rakshasa Deathdealer: $2

Rattleclaw Mystic: $5

Savage Knuckleblade: $5

Siege Rhino: $4

Utter End: $6

Villainous Wealth: $2

Windswept Heath: $20

Wooded Foothills: $20

Total Rare Value: $161

All 15 Mythic Rares are spoiled!

Anafenza, the Foremost: $8

Clever Impersonator: $15

Empty the Pits: $5

Narset, Enlightened Master: $6

Sarkhan, the Dragonspeaker: $25

See the Unwritten: $5

Sidisi, Brood Tyrant: $4

Sorin, Solemn Visitor: $15

Surrak Dragonclaw: $15

Wingmate Roc: $6

Total Mythic Value: $104

So plugging this into the formula, we get the following:

(2R ($161) + 1M ($104) = $426

$426/121 = $3.52 value per pack, or $126.72 per box.

Tomorrow is the last day of my financial review. There are a lot of good Commons and Uncommons (and foils!) in this set, so stay tuned for
tomorrow!
