This might be the most Nick Spagnolo deck I’ve ever seen. He’s got a U/B Control deck with a mini exploit theme, and I definitely like it. Youthful Scholar
isn’t a great Magic card, but abusing it with exploit is going to pay you higher dividends than just playing something like Divination. Other than that,
he’s mostly a normal-ish U/B deck, but there are a few nice ones hiding out, like the Silumgar Monument.
Merciless Executioner and Silumgar Sorcerer are pretty reasonable variants of Foul-Tongue Invocation and Dissolve, two cards that are already in the deck.
CrashingCadence even goes so far as to play a Dissipate! Clearly these cards are fine on their own, but you really want a Youthful Scholar to go with them.
Of course, you don’t want to be Scholar-flooded, so there’s only two in the deck.
The rest of the deck has a Dragon theme to it, with Dragonlord Silumgar, Icefall Regent, and Silumgar, the Drifting Death capable of powering up the
Silumgar’s Scorns. This looks like the first deck I’ve really seen that just tries to splash the Dragon theme into a deck instead of going hard into it.
That concept doesn’t seem that farfetched to me.
The sideboard is chocked full of edict effects, which I assume is to fight decks like Abzan Aggro. You don’t really want to overload on edicts against
Esper Dragons because you’ll eventually lose to their Dig Through Times. Shambling Goblin is a nice option that combos well with Merciless Executioner and
Silumgar Sorcerer, and is a fine card on its own. It’s one of the few things that can trade with Goblin Rabblemaster for a single mana (although they get
to make a couple tokens) and trades straight up with Dragon Fodder, which is definitely pretty nice.
Overall, there’s some nice stuff going on here that many people haven’t tried yet. If you’re working on U/B Control, it might benefit you to think outside
the box a bit. There are more options out there than you think.
