I always feels silly when my strategy gets one-upped. Lingering Souls was the talk of the Pro Tour, but this deck should dominate the Lingering Souls
mirrors with superior token generating power.
It focuses on Young Pyromancer and Old Pyromancer (AKA Monastery Mentor) alongside a pile of discard and removal spells. Thoughtseize and Inquisition of
Kozilek protect your creatures from removal spells and help you not die to combo decks. They can always be used to snipe sideboard bombs out of your
opponent’s hand, such as Zealous Persecution. Dark Confidant provides a nice engine here, as the mana curve is relatively low, and Lightning Helix plus
Vault of the Archangel can gain some of that life back.
With Crackling Doom, Path to Exile, and Thoughtseize, there are a lot of generic answers to any threat, so it will be rare where something like Tarmogoyf
slips through the cracks and you can’t deal with it. Ground creatures without evasion end up being poor against this deck anyway, as there isn’t any
shortage of chump blockers.
I wouldn’t be surprised if a couple copies of Intangible Virtue end up making their way into the deck, especially considering how good they are against
sideboard cards like Zealous Persecution, Golgari Charm, and Night of Souls’ Betrayal, but overall, I think the deck looks great.
