Daily Digest: Podless Pod

Still got the shell of a Pod deck lying around? Feeling the Modern banning blues? GerryT has something you can do with all those extra Pod cards this weekend at #SCGHOU’s $5,000 Premier IQ!

No, this is not Jacob’s Wilson’s Top 8 deck from Pro Tour Fate Reforged, this is something entirely different. Back in the day, Zwischenzug used to play a Birthing Pod deck that maxed out on combo pieces, and he did pretty well. I think Martin Juza even played it in a Grand Prix or two. This deck is basically the same thing, except the Pods are finally gone.

In a new Modern world, that’s not necessarily a bad thing, at least for right now. This deck could play out similarly to Jacob’s deck, only for your opponent to be blindsided by the combo. Additionally, with Infect being all the rage now, maindeck Melira is pretty attractive.

Fauna Shaman subs in for the Birthing Pods, and while it’s clearly a worse imitation, it tends to get the job done. Since the deck is less resilient without Birthing Pod, maindeck Spellskites start looking pretty good. Again, with Burn and Infect being popular and Splinter Twin outright winning the Pro Tour, this deck starts looking like it’s got some nice maindeck hate against the entire format.
