Daily Digest: Platinum Tron

Archetypes have to evolve sometimes or they go extinct. Luckily for you Tron players, there are a lot of ways to go! See one of the most exciting ways to ramp in today’s Daily Digest!

With Modern evolving rapidly following the Pro Tour, I started to see a shift away from G/R Tron to G/W Tron. Decks like Burn and Infect needed better answers than red offered. What if we went a different route entirely?

Platinum Angel + Pact of Negation was once good enough to make it into Vintage, so it doesn’t surprise me to see it here. Against decks like Burn and Infect, it might not be enough to win you the game automatically, but it should certainly buy you plenty of time to get to Emrakul, the Aeons Torn. If Pact of Negation isn’t enough, there are also some Spellskites.

This deck loses a decent amount of what makes Tron so powerful in Modern, which is the Turn 3 Karn Liberated draws, but it’s operating under the assumption that Platinum Angel is just as good. For matchups where it’s not, there’s a playset of Karns waiting in the sideboard.

Even if this deck isn’t great, it’s the type of innovation I love to see, and it’s no surprise to see it coming from Matsugan. He’s definitely a player to watch for on Magic Online.
