Daily Digest: Old School Gruul

The first two-day Standard Open brought us plenty of surprises! GerryT has scoured the results and is here with one of the sweetest ones!

This deck doesn’t mess around.

Despite being green, Sylvan Caryatid and Courser of Kruphix want nothing to do with this deck. Instead, we turn to aggressively-costed creatures like Heir
of the Wilds, Fanatic of Xenagos, Boon Satyr, and Ashcloud Phoenix. Lightning Strike and Crater’s Claws clear the way or deal the finishing blow.

Siege Rhino, Whip of Erebos, End Hostilities, and Hordeling Outburst can all be issues, but the sideboard addresses those well. Fated Conflagration is a
great removal spell against opposing green monsters, planeswalkers help fight control decks, and Destructive Revelry does a number against constellation
decks. For everything else, there’s Arc Lightning.

I love how this deck isn’t trying to do any cutesy stuff and instead focuses on getting the opponent dead. With a 4th place finish at the first two-day
Standard Open, I think it’s safe to say this deck has some legs in Standard.
