Daily Digest: Oh, The Brewtality!

The $5,000 Modern Premier IQ at #SCGPORT might be won by Twin or Abzan or Affinity. Then again, it could be taken down by this monster! GerryT highlights another sweet one in today’s Daily Digest!

There are so many flavors of midrange in Modern, but only one thing is constant, and that’s the color black. No matter what you do, you can’t get away from
discard, removal, and Liliana of the Veil. This deck takes that core and uses a minimalist splash of blue for some cantrips, counterspells, and the
activation of Tasigur, the Golden Fang.

While you’re lacking Tarmogoyf, you have Geralf’s Messenger, Phyrexian Obliterator, and Tasigur, the Golden Fang to provide suitable replacements.
Phyrexian Obliterator is particularly frightening in a world of Lightning Bolts and green creatures. You can’t even chump it with Lingering Souls! The
problem has always been the BBBB mana cost, but this deck makes it work easily.

Burn is clearly a rough matchup, but the counterspells help there, as do the Dragon’s Claws and Spellskites in the sideboard. With Night of Souls’ Betrayal
and Engineered Explosives, Lingering Souls, frequently the best card in midrange matchups, isn’t nearly as reliable.
