Daily Digest: Morph Beatdowns

The days of morph being a fringe Limited mechanic are long over! See the latest in a long line of attempts to make the little gray men count before #SCGCLE!

Patrick Chapin detailed the exploration of this archetype leading up to Pro Tour Dragons of Tarkir, but he ran out of time necessary in order to tune the deck. Thankfully, some other people are willing to finish what Patrick started!

It seems like Tarkanmag valued the creatures that morphed for the cheapest possible in order to get the most use out of Secret Plans and Trail of Mastery, which is probably the best direction to take the deck. Tarkanmag spliced a little Assault Formation action into the deck, which allows your Monastery Flocks and Dragon’s Eye Savants to get in for some serious damage. Profaner of the Dead also works quite well with a bunch of high toughness creatures, which should give you enough time to get your engine online.

At first glance, this deck looks threat-light, but that can be deceiving. There might not be a bunch of Sagu Maulers, but Deathmist Raptor does a lot of work, as do Trail of Mystery and Assault Formation. If Secret Plans is online, you should be able to flood the board with 2/2s, which should also do the trick.

Red aggro is clearly a difficult matchup, but the sideboard has a lot of ways to shore that up. Past that, there are some counterspells for control and midrange, and I’m not sure what else you’d need aside from that.
