Daily Digest: Izzet Aggro?

Burn decks in Modern got a boost before Treasure Cruise was banned. Is it possible the Standard red aggro decks could use a blue boost for #SCGDAL? GerryT investigates!

Mono-Red Aggro had a nice showing at Grand Prix Miami, but perhaps we can do better. Instead of relying on things like Firedrinker Satyr and Foundry Street Denizen to deal the majority of damage, we can focus on heavy hitters. They’ll rarely go dead in the lategame, and each threat basically demands a removal spell.

With so many four power creatures, Crater’s Claws and Stubborn Denial seem like they could be pretty nice. Shaman of the Great Hunt and Flamewake Phoenix give you even more staying power thanks to all the ferocity in the deck. Some planeswalkers, such as Sarkhan, the Dragonspeaker and Chandra, Pyromaster, also help in that regard.

Barrage of Boulders is a powerful sideboard card in matchups that stall out or feature a large amount of X/1 creatures. Disdainful Stroke helps against the always annoying Siege Rhino, but Monastery Siege is kind of a wild card. I could see it in grindy matchups or as a way to make their removal spells worse, but neither of those uses strikes me as particularly useful as a four-of sideboard card.

I think this deck could use some work, but the power level is clearly there.
