Daily Digest: Counterspell Is OP

It’s easy to forget that a bad counterspell is still incredible. If you want a back door to success at this weekend’s #SCGINVI $5,000 Modern Premier IQ, GerryT wouldn’t dare Deprive you of the means…

Since the Delver decks lost Treasure Cruise, they’ve been scrambling to find something new that can put them over the top. Things like Tasigur, the Golden Fang and Gurmag Angler are stepping in to fill the role of Tarmogoyf, and so far that seems to be working out pretty well. The Modern versions tend to still end up a little short, but maybe actual Counterspell is the card they need.

The intimidating Gyarados went undefeated in a Daily Event with four copies of Deprive in his deck, and you don’t include four copies of that card on accident. Clearly he thought the card was worth playing, and certainly worth playing in excess. Time will tell if that’s the correct decision to make, but it wouldn’t surprise me if it was at least a step in the right direction. As it turns out, even Counterspell with a hefty drawback is still Counterspell, and this deck is the least affected by the downside.

Murderous Cut is another powerful card, but there’s a limit to how many delve cards you can play. Six might be pushing it, especially alongside Snapcaster Mage, but it all seemed to come together.
