Daily Digest: Burning Boats

The Grand Prix in San Antonio last week gave us some very interesting new ideas in a Standard format with no shortage of them! Check out the tech GerryT recommends for #SCGPORT!

Most of the time, you can’t just port a deck from format to format. How the deck functions in one format might not be good enough in another, or maybe how
the deck matches up against the different metagame might make it a poor choice. In this case, we might have a Modern deck in Standard.

Gareth Aye made the Top 8 of Grand Prix San Antonio with a red aggressive deck splashing for Treasure Cruise, incredibly similar to some of the decks that
are popping up in Modern. As far as porting decks from format to format, the most successful ones tend to be incredibly linear since you don’t really care
what your opponents are doing.

Obviously the card quality in Standard is much weaker than Modern, but Gareth makes it work. He even identified threats to his deck and found unique
answers to things like Siege Rhino with Fated Conflagration and Disdainful Stroke.

Overall, I like what Gareth did with his deck and was pleased to see him rewarded with a Grand Prix Top 8 for his efforts.
