Daily Digest: An Unlikely Champion

It’s been quite a while since we’ve seen U/W Control at the top of the standings in Modern, but this weekend saw not one but two strong finishes for the archetype as it begins making its resurgence.

One weekend, two tournaments, and two unique U/W Control decks have excellent records in Modern. Coincidence?

Both decks use early interaction like Spell Snare, Mana Leak, Remand, and Path to Exile to keep the board clear while roadblocks like Kitchen Finks and Restoration Angel brick-wall anything that may have slipped through the cracks. Both decks even have Wall of Omens to stave off early beatdowns.

Both decks have a way to go over the top in the mid-game, Daniel with his Sphinx’s Revelations and Yuuya with his Sun Titan and Dragonlord Ojutais, and that’s a recipe for success against grindy decks like Jund.

Make no mistake though – these are control decks, but both are trying to end the game as quickly as they can. Cards like Remand and Mana Leak are only useful for so long, so you can’t answer every threat in the late game. Your goal should be to invalidate what your opponent is doing while also turning the corner when the opportunity presents itself.

While Yuuya “only” went 3-1 over the weekend, Daniel outright won his tournament, defeating Yuuta Takahashi in the finals. It’s hard to say who had the more difficult weekend, but either way, both decks did quite well for themselves.
