Earlier today, I published an article by Jim Davis called Women and Magic. The goal of this article was to further Meghan Wolff’s message along from earlier in the week about how women can further themselves in the Magic community. It has now been taken down. This is going to be me briefly explaining my thought process and issuing an apology to each and every one of you.
First of all, I am sorry.
I understand that the decisions I make reflect not only upon myself, but also on the Magic community as a whole, StarCityGames as a company, every single one of the writers who I am in charge of, and each and every single one of you who choose to visit this website.
When I first read Meghan’s article a few weeks ago, I was blown away by how well written and how well thought out the piece was. I was very excited about the positive impact it could have on the Magic community. But I also did what I always do when I receive pieces on difficult subject matter – I run it by people who I believe to be more educated than me on the subject at hand and get their feedback on the piece. While I believe that I am very knowledge about many things involving Magic, I have always felt that it is ideal to hear from a few different voices so that I am not blinded by my own point of view. After doing so, Meghan’s article was met with so much overwhelming positivity from those I requested feedback from that it seemed like a no brainer to publish the article. And upon publishing, the article was read by many and praised for its message.
When Jim got in touch with me about wanting to write an article that had to deal with Meghan’s, I was unsure if it was a good idea or not. I trust in Jim’s writing ability, and told him upfront that there was a good possibility that it would get shot down, but that there was the potential to further Meghan’s message along – a message that I felt was worth furthering along to help with the growth of the game. So I gave Jim the green light to get to work.
After working with Jim, and running the article by numerous people, much like I did with Meghan’s, I got a similar response to his article – overwhelming positivity that made the article seem like a no brainer to publish. After publishing the article and seeing the feedback, that clearly was not the case.
At the end of the day, you each put your faith in me to treat the articles published on this website in such a fashion that they will succeed and represent our game accordingly. And in this instance, I not only let Jim down, but I also let the Magic community down as well. And for that, I am truly sorry. I will strive to be better in the future with my decision making when it comes to the articles that represent not only StarCityGames, but the Magic community as a whole. I understand that I have a large reach with the decisions I make, so it is incredibly important that I get them right, no matter the size.
When you make mistakes in life, you can run from them or you can own up. I’ve never been one to run. This falls completely on me. No one else. And I am very sorry.
