Sam Black wants to explore some more of the Modern format, and today he gives Golgari Grave-Troll a visit since he’s had such great results with the card in the past. Check out his latest video as he takes Dredgevine out for a spin!
Golgari Grave-Troll was unbanned relatively recently, and there hasn’t been a lot of time to explore it, so the possibility definitely still exists that there’s a great Grave-Troll deck out there. As it happens, Legion273 won the Modern Festival on Magic Online with Dredgevine, and the list looks pretty good to me. I love Faithless Looting and Satyr Wayfinder and I qualified for my first Pro Tour with Golgari Grave-Troll, so I figured this is the kind of deck I should definitely try out.
This feels like a pretty good matchup. It’s like Abzan, where I have pressure and removal, but I think I’m probably a little more mana-efficient overall which tips things in my favor. Not to mention Spellskite.
Round Two
The fact that this deck doesn’t need too much mana to operate helps, but most importantly, the graveyard isn’t touched by Restore Balance, so it’s a good place to keep things in order to break the symmetry. As with Spellskite against Infect, the pair of Ancient Grudges are huge here.
Round Three
I’m not sure about this matchup. My guess is that it’s not great. I’m not good again Iona, Path to Exile is a relatively good removal spell against me, and I’m usually not quite fast enough. That said, nothing about my opponent’s deck stops me from stealing games with my good draws.
Round Four
This seems like a matchup I’d be happy to play from the Amulet side. I have a few interactive cards but no huge trumps, and I don’t have a clock that’s difficult for Primeval Titan to stop. The fact that my opponent not only had but actually drewBojuka Bog in games two and three made things very lopsided.
Conclusions
Overall, this deck felt solid but not unfair. I like that it has explosive draws that do something unique while being able to play a reasonable fair game with a reasonable mix of removal and card selection. This seems like something to seriously look into if Wizards ever gets around to banning Amulet.
