As I write this, I’m locked for the Top 8 of #SCGATL. I like my deck, but this deck looks waaaay better. I wish I would have played it! It’s very similar to Jeskai Black, but several #MTGOGW cards made their way into the maindeck. In order to fit all those, Ignacio cut white entirely. If it’s not clear by now, I love this decklist.
Rally the Ancestors was the de facto best deck in Standard, but Kalitas, Traitor of Ghet gives decks that can’t play Anafenza, the Foremost a fighting chance. It’s not quite as good as Anafenza against Rally because they can still profitably discard creatures to Jace, Vryn’s Prodigy. However, the zombie making clause puts a very fast clock on them.
Chandra, Flamecaller; Goblin Dark-Dwellers; and Jori En, Ruin Diver are also powerful new cards that Grixis can take advantage of. Jori En means you don’t have to play the full boat of Painful Truths to be on parity in control mirrors. Goblin Dark-Dwellers does an excellent Flametongue Kavu impersonation in this deck and it also plays well with Jori En!
Chandra, Flamecaller is typically good when the board is stable, when you’re ahead, and when you’re behind, which is the hallmark of a good six-mana planeswalker. It can be difficult to defend against Siege Rhino and creature-lands, but it’s worth the effort.
It should be pretty easy for me to figure out what I’m recording videos with next week.
